Young kauw

[Turin]

Just cought a young kauw (sort of crow Corvus monedula ).
It was sitting on the street i could pick it up.
Its now in my garden shed it doesnt seem to be affraid of me but it wont eat.
I can touch it.
put some fod and water in the shed to maby it will eat when im not there.
anybody ever had a kauw or crow.
How do i handel it properly.

Both hands around it's neck and twist sharply
If it's the same as the crows we get here

LOL, LOL RPJS. Crows are the most noisy nasty birds I can imagine. They sit in the trees at RR island and caw caw caw at the strangest times early in the mornin'. JR

It's a little early in the year, but around here if I found a crow that couldn't fly I might be a little concerned about West Nile Virus. I know you said young so maybe to young to fly?
I gotta agree with RPJS.

So now you are a foster parent.
These young crows are not afraid of people and there is no reason to think that it is sick.It is a pity that you took it because its parents were probably nearby.
Anyway ,the deed is done.They are very smart birds and if treated well they will stay with you for years.
You can feed it small pieces of meat and it will be your friend.You must stroke its throat(krop in dutch)or the side of its beak and insert the food with chop sticks
Just be aware of the trouble they may cause.Once used to people,they will come in the neighbor's house and they are known for stealing anything shiny,including watches and rings.They will carry these things to their nest,aka,your home.You may have a lot of explaining to do in near future.

Oh my goodness....This has got to be one of the strangest threads I have ever read. I can almost see the headlines now as West Nile Virus finds its first human host and starts a pandemic (World wide epidemic), obliterating 1/3 of the human population....And we're witnessing the start right here on the Iboats forums....

Well, ok maybe not that severe, but its still the strangest post I've ever read as I've grown up shooting crows LOL

They will eat darn near anything, but they are primarily meat eaters.
Worms, frogs, hamburger.
The neighbors kid get one when they can, feed it, tame it, then start letting it outside.
It will sit in their tree or on the porch and wait for them to come outside.
They usually fly off by the end of summer.

As said they will eat pretty much anything if they have to but prefer meat. You usually see many of them gathered around the latest roadkill suprise when you are out driving

It will eat now I feed it gehakt (the meat where you make hamburgers from) with some water to soften It a bit.
Left it in the shed today with radio turned on softly.
It aint afraid.
eats well now.

Put it in a cage and bring it in the house for a month.

rabbit cage, ferret cage, bird cage, whatever.

My parents in law had a rabbit cage wich they didnt use, so we took that one, converted it into a bird cage (read: but it upside down so it's higher).

While I was busy rebuilding the cage my girlfriend talked to the bird and he enjoyed it. He isn't afraid of people and the eats from our hand. :redface:

It eats cat food now. an some meat.
I dont care what it eats as long as it eats.
Ive got 4 turtles you dont wanne know what they some times find and eat
dead bird for example.
So i dont care for stinking food.

I put tha cage just out side the house next to the door so i wont smell him.

It cant have west nile virus that doesnt live here in Holland.

local health deptment here has determined that west nile virus is not a threat, therefor it is not worth monitoring I see dead birds all over (not in large amounts but still) anyway

1 crow
1 pot water
1 onion
1 rib celery
1 carrot
salt and pepper to taste, maybe some poultry seasoning to taste
boil bird with all other ingrediants tellmeat falls from bone, de-bone and serve.



Have fun with the new pet! Had a freind that had one when I was young, was a real blast.

Yeah food is where my head keeps going with this thread . . . but not fowl. When I read "Young Kauw" a nice charbroiled Veal Chop keeps coming to mind . . . Yum!
