Was wondering what fish brings your B/P to its highest level when pursuing your favorite fin.

Mine is the Musky. Nothing like seeing one come out of the depths and explode out of the water when attacking a top water. Whats yours?

Re: Your Favorite Fish

Howdy Gonfishn.

I have to agree with you on fresh water catching. Seeing a big musky nail a topwater is like seeing a 12 point whitetail walking up to your stand.

For eating, however, I like walleye best of freshwater species. A little short on the wiggle, perhaps, but unmatched on the table.

Salmon are in a category alone.

For saltwater I prefer dolphin/dorado/mahi mahi on light tackle. Like a chest of jewels glittering in the air 6' above the water. And fresh from the broiler. . . .AHHH! What wonderful fish!!

I'm still considering meeting you in June for a day or so of Musky hunting. :)

Top water for Musky or Northern, but deep cold water 15" Crappie are a handful on an ultralite.

On the table, it is walleye/perch.

For pure sport I'm usaully chasing Pike or Bass. However for eating it has to be fresh perch. The Pike have a strong "fish" taste to them as the get bigger and with MI size limits they get even stronger.

I like 'hunting' for big Sow speckled trout off the texas coast...and floundering is a blast as well.

As for fresh water, Bass is about the only real sportfish we've got around these parts...along with hybrid stripers, white bass, freshwater redfish, and cats...

I like Mahi Mahi when offshore, you can't beat them on the table either.

Shawn

Re: Your Favorite Fish

At this time of the year here in Texas, the white bass fishing is awesome. Use ultralight tackle and head to the streams/rivers feeding into the main body of the lake/resevoir. Got 30(kept only 5 to eat) 2/4 ,went back 2/5 and caught 11. Went both days for 1-2 hours after work. All bank fishing, no boat to load/haul/launch. This action will keep up until mid March then its sow bass time! Muskie/Northern/Walleye are great except they are 1000+ miles away. Come April, I'll see you down at Rockport ShawnQ. Love catching them specks and reds also...

pound per pound nothing fights like a smallmouth
bass. I have had 1lb fish break water 3 or 4 times,
and hook into a 4 or 5 pounder...forgedabodit!
never caught a big enough musky to know....
this summer perhaps :D

I have to agree with you on the smally's fighting, MY, especially the ones that think they can fly.

But I have had the good fortune to catch a couple of 2# bluegills on a flyrod. I think they are stronger. :)

Favorite fish ah!
I enjoy all kinds of fishn
I like big toothy pike.
They are ultimate on a fly rod.
My favorite, probably because I only get to fish
for them during a short season are Salmon, they
can make your line dance more times than any
other fish that swims, Today I fished for walleye,
a slow day but a few better than 20".It was nice
to get a few good hits and they taste so good
cooked up on the spot, every thing tastes better
outdoors. As soon as ice out, I'll chase lake trout,in mountain lakes as they are glacier fed and ice cold. The trout can reach 40 lbs . But the average is 2 to 4 lbs. They are hard to beat
on the barbecue or in the smoker. and then its
back to salmon in the fall. blah blah blah.

Re: Your Favorite Fish

For saltwater Albacore, Sixgil or Sevengil sharks, Salmon, Lingcod, Halibut, Striper. For Saltwater bays and rivers, Sturgeon, Salmon, Halibut, Stripers. Freshwater Shad, Salmon, Steelhead, Striper, Channelcat.
For the table, Halibut, Lincod, Albacore and catfish.

The Albacore hits at 30 mile per hour and rip the line off your reel. Catch a 70 lb Sturgeon and have him head right at the boat go under the boat and jump 6 feet in the air within ten feet of the boat will wake you up also.

Hats off to Mr. Bass in the smallmouth category !

I don't fish saltwater, so no comment there.

I agree Musky are very exciting to catch as well, but I catch too few of them to say they are more fun to catch than bass.
Hi all
This is the fish I think is the most fun to catch in saltwater, never really get the chance to fish much in freshwater (not enough of it in my part of Australia). These Spanish mackeral can grow up to 80 inches and about 130 lbs in our waters, but are more common around the 20 to 50 lb size. They really put up a fight, I use 30 lb line with triple 5/0 hooks and can still take an hour to boat one this size, they can take 200 yards of line off your reel in seconds and are strong enough to pull a 17ft boat.

This fish (not the best photo) was about 56 inches and 42 - 44 lbs, the biggest I've caught in this boat were two in one morning both over 60 lb and are still very good to eat at this size, we catch a lot of other pelagic species but IMO the spanish mackeral is the best.
Bob

HOLLY MACKERAL Boating Bob!!! (no pun intended) :D

That's the biggest Spanish Mackeral I've ever seen... Just wondering if that's what we would call a kingfish, cause I've never heard of spanish mac's getting that big....

Round here mostly in the late fall and early winter get large schools of spanish mac's, but they don't get much bigger than a few pounds and occassionaly some up too about 8 Lbs... Good eats though...

I mostly run around the flats and bays on the ICW looking for Snook (ol' Linesiders) and of course Snapper, both inshore and offshore with light tackle... I'm still trying for a big tarpon, but so far no luck...

Long as it pulls lots of drag, I don't care what it is...
Re: Your Favorite Fish

for freshwater,, i'll put a topwater bustin' rockfish up again your 'musky' anyday..!!

as far as saltwater.. no doubt/no brainer ,,ROCKFISH..( well really i have to say a big bluefish ) .. they've been known to break blood vessles in your arms & shoulders..nasty bruises..

as far as good eatin' ,, not much beats the thick slab of fluffy white meat of a 'rockfish'..

but as for lb for lb,, oz for oz fighter,, hands down a 'sunny'.. a better fighter then a bluegill ,IMHO...

Any fish that swims is a good one. I like to catch anything. If you want to talk about fight for the size you can't beat any species of bream especially when they get to this size http://www.geocities.com/peterfishbuster/bream.html
BTW this was for Mellow Yellow because he may have wanted to see what they look like in that size.
