Re: Do you let your dogs or dog run loose?

We had one episode a while back when my cousin was raising rabbits, one of the dogs would bring a rabbit home every once in a while. My cousin never complained of any rabbits coming up missing. Here we were wondering how these dogs were getting the rabbits. Come to find out that my cousin was taking the dead rabbits and throwing them into the woods, of course that is where the dogs were getting the rabbits from. Then we had another episode where one of our dogs would bring home a loaf a bread every once in a while. Nobody complained about this situation either but we found out my uncle across the road would throw the old loaves of bread out back of his home, so that is where the dogs were getting that from. They had pigs that they would save the bread for but they normally kept the bread stocked in a metal building, occasionally they would throw a loaf out the back door of the house.

As I mentioned the oldest dog is 14 years old and all the neighbors know his name and can walk right up to him without a problem. Same thing with the other dogs that are only 5 years old at tops. They are good around kids, but I am not going to let them out of my sight with the kids. All it takes is a kid grabbing or hitting the dog in the wrong spot and the dog will possibly snap. I'm not going to swear on a stack of bibles and say that my dogs would not hurt anybody at all. My thoughts or opinion I don't think they would threaten anybody on somebody else's land, the dogs could always prove me wrong. But be ware if you come up in my yard and try to steal something I'll say that right up front.

Some people will stay in there vehicle in our drive way while waiting on somebody to come out the door. Yesterday when the cops and animal control pulled up they got out of the car and I didn't even get around the corner of the house the dogs were way ahead of me. The dogs walked up and sniffed them didn't have any problems out of any of the 2 dogs that were out there. I don't agree with the way the animal control lady acted because I don't believe she gave the dogs a chance to sniff her hand, she kept, facing the dog which is alright, but at least give the dog a chance to sniff you and meet you. The girl wasn't bad looking at all I might add lol.

I can't say that I can really choose between any of the dogs I have owned and tell you what dog was the best that would be really hard to answer. We had a dog named Rebel that would meet up with one of my other cousin's dog about 5am in the morning and take off like a human would and go out hunting lol, this went on for a long time like clock work 5am old Rusty I believe he was a blood hound showed up at our home to meet up with rebel. I couldn't tell you where they went from here but I believe they met up with other neighbors dogs and went out as a group. They may not of went hunting, they could of went out to meet some female dogs.

Re: Do you let your dogs or dog run loose?

When they are in my livestock, killing everything in sight for the fun of it, they are worse than varmints.

It doesn't even compare to a few pawprints left on the hood of your car.

having just killed two dogs only a week ago, whose owners didn't see fit to keep track of them, my sense of humor about this is at a low ebb. As far as I know, the owners haven't even missed them yet; no lost dog signs at the store, or any inquiries around the neighborhood that I have heard about.

That's why I edited my post:D Because sometimes, they can be (I've had to shoot a few myself :() Some dog owners don't even care, which makes you wonder why they would have a dog in the first place.

If you let your dogs run free you need to br ready for the consiquenses of their actions ( biting someone, killing another animal, chasing livestock ) all of wich in my books would result in the death of the offinding Dog. I know I know I'm just a cruel hard hearted B****rd but thats life here on the farm. I've had to put several of my own dogs down over the years. It was my fault for not being able to train them between right from wrong. As much as people would like to believe that they are human they are not! they are animals with instincts imbedded for milloins of years to preform a certan way to survive. I love my new Lab BO but certain things just cannot be tolerated. I hope he tows the line:rolleyes:

Tasha, is only out of the yard on a leash. being a husty, all she wants to do if loose is run till she is so tired, she comes home. there is no catching or corning her. she will run circles around you and look at you, and smile. " you can't catch me". she is not agressive, but if attacked she goes for the kill.

When I had mine,an Australian border collie, he never felt a leash, nor did he need to.He used to run next to me while I was riding my horse and when he got tired,he'd ride in front of me on the saddle.Him and my horse were great buddies, they always hung out together.
I miss him.

Re: Do you let your dogs or dog run loose?

That husky is a beautiful dog TD, I had missed out on a chance to purchase one a while back. My brother use to own a Wolf, we nearly ended up with it but that to was a pretty dog.

Lakester that dog of yours if pretty also.

The german shepard wanna be has allergies, one flea gets on him and he goes banchie. I have spent some money on him for treatment from the vet. The other day when I took him down I had his leash tied to the inside of the bed of my truck. I stopped at a red light and the dog jumped out of the truck about 6 miles from where we live. Here I am at a now green light I throw the 4 ways on and jump out and throw the dog back in the truck. He came out of it unharmed. As I was talking to one owner at the vet he said his dog got killed from jumping out of bed of the truck and the leash broke his neck.

My German shepard (Shank), his allergies get so bad that I thought about having him put down. I have access to a gun but I couldn't see it in my heart to shoot him. Right now he is alright but he is an expensive dog to own. This is another reason I don't want anything to happen to him or any of the other dogs for that matter. We started asking neighbors today about the dog attack and from the 2 we have asked (and there are plenty more to ask) they haven't heard about any of it.

I hear ya rolmops ain't nothing like man's best friend (a good dog)

I must add that I don't believe I am a careless owner by any means. These dogs do know discipline and have been disciplined. Most of the time you don't even half to speak to them just point your finger in the direction you want them to go and they go lol. Shadow the black lab and Bobby Sue (the female) will stand at the door way with the door wide open until you tell them they can come in then they of course come in.

Get some Benidril wildmaninal for the allergies.
Not near as expensive as the vet and it will help.
Give it to him every day.

I believe we have given him Benidril in the past but to be honest we probably didn't do it for long enough to give it a chance to work. I have some right in my medicine cabinet. Should I give him a whole pill or a half? He weighs about 65LBs.

Use the liquid. It works better than the pills do.
Yes, you have to give it to them every day for it to work.
I use a 3cc syringe to give mine.

Re: Do you let your dogs or dog run loose?

OUr last dog was a cheasepeake bay retriever, a bull headed family oreintated dog. We got papers that she was purebred and she had a tendency to bite anyone that wasn't a family member. Once you got to know her she was fine, she liked to escape the house and run around on all the neighbors yard and forests. We gave her to a shelter that had a cheasey revival type thing and they said she was sent to a farm with room to run and was doing very well. I loved that dog. She would follow me to the local lake and go swimming with me all the time and loved to play catch. She definiatly wasn't a good dog when she didn't know you. We drove overnight and had to stay in a motel to get her and paid about 300 for her before shots and all. Come to find out that when we took her in she wasn't purebred as the papers had stated and they gaurentee that she was bred with a Rott. To try to cure the biting problem we put up a run to our house and used a 3 inch closed eye screw in the corner of the house and she was so muscular that she ripped it out not once but twice thats when we ultimatly decided to get rid of her.

Last summer as we were in search of a new pooch, going for the black lab chocolate lab type, my sister (who lived 10 hours away) said someone was giving away lab pups. Long story short she had to come up to our house in 3 weeks and got the pup and now is the best dog in the world. She has a bad licking problems but its not half as bad as biting. We figure she is part black lab part golden retriever and the lab wasn't purebred because she is all yellow goldenish. This time of year she has the long bushy tail of the golden with the dark yellow of a yellow lab.

We leave her out loose when we are outside and when we don't have time to let her loose we have a run. Which she is content with for the most part and she is let loose for at least 30 mins a day when i come home from work. I didn't vote because it is equal as to the usual of what she is left out loose and what she is tied up.

The only major dog related problem we ever had with other is our neighbor that had no respect for us country folks. He was from the bigger city and we live in a very heavily populated vacation destination for the southerners such as him. He would leave his black lab loose which would run up to our house and then our dogs would run off with it. I finially took out my slingshot and shot rocks around the dog (not trying to hit it because he was a big ole baby a real nice dog but not trained at all) and he would hear a rock or 2 hit the pavement and scurry home.

Awww SBN, he isn't spoiled already is he? I see the design on his chest. I take it he was just born or a couple of weeks old when he nearly died? The Jack Russel that my brother got for his family has a triangle design on its behind lol, so they nick named her triangle butt :D. That gray female dog I have looks like she has some Pit bull in her. I appreciate the input also on the medication.

Kmk that lab mixed you have now should also love the water. You should bring her to the lake and see what she does.

Re: Do you let your dogs or dog run loose?

He was a couple months old and it got carried in on him.
We had never had any parvo problem here. Let me tell you if you raise Rotts, you would know it.
And he never had the normal parvo, he had the stomach parvo that stays in the stomach and does not move on into the intestines.
Get you some liquid and give it to him ever day and after about a week you will see the difference.

Re: Do you let your dogs or dog run loose?

I have a 3 year old full size Collie. He has run of the yard and basically the farm; 160 acres. We have buffalo here, and occasionally they break through the fence. Once a big bull was trompping loose through the yard while the kids were out playing outside. The dog chased the bull to the furthest corner of the yard and kept him cornered there for a couple hours until we could herd it back into the pasture and mend the fence.

He doesn't chase cars, but he seems to have a dislike for cyclists that might happen to be going down the road, I haven't been able to catch him in the act chasing them, but when I do, it shouldn't be hard to cure him of the habit.

Collies are pretty much the most intelligent dogs that I have ever seen. I have him trained to the point where I can put a piece of meat 6 inches in front of his nose on the floor, and he won't touch it until I tell him he can have it, even if I leave the room.

A brown paper bag full of you know what in the mail box is a great reminder to people that let their dogs roam.

That being the case then me and a bunch of other people in Etowah county here in Alabama should be getting a bunch of S*** in our mail boxes. I'd hate to be the one driving down the road and having to smell everybody's mail box, few, or be the mail man. Then if I ever caught a person doing that they would have a dead fish lurking somewhere in there car or a bag of the above mentioned to return the favor.

LOL Vlad

byacey, fortunately we don't have the problem with the dogs chasing the cars or cyclers and of course we get the occasional ATV on the road. For the first time we had the jail birds cleaning the sides of our main road. Our german shepard was the only one that got a little bull headed and went to check the situation out even after my father and I told him NO. He has never seen a man of a different culture but when that man told that dog of mine to "get on back up that yard" that dog took off like a bullet back toward the house lol. I was down there near the right of way with the 4 wheeler to make sure the dog didn't get into any kind of trouble because none of the dogs are use to seeing that many people walking up the road.

She does we live in view of the lake from our patio door and last summer she ran off a few times when we would go out there with her and she would come back completely soaked. Then I would have to take my turn.:):D

The first problem with this is that the mailman is going to be the one finding it. Second, it's a felony and in my area the police would be called and you would get in trouble and have a record for the rest of your life.
