SBN

I know them Rotts are only mean if you raise them to be mean. My brother's neighbor has 2 rotts he keeps in the pasture with his horses at times but mostly he keeps them pinned up in an old chicken house. I believe they got loose one time but didn't threaten anything or anybody. This really ruins my plans on getting a Jack Russel that I would like to get.
I have 3 male Rotts and they are all big babys.
The one is named after iboats on his papers.
If you get a JR, get a female and have her fixed.
They are the best.
Males can be a little high strung till you get them fixed.
I just lost one of my female JR about a month ago.
Just quit breathing one night while she was laying beside me on the couch.
I just heard her let out a big breath and she was gone.:(
She was 15.

I have found that a paint gun works very well on strays in my yard. Definitely need to work on my aim though.

I'm glad I don't have neighbors like that with them sharp teeth :D, they might as well have sharp teeth though to go along with the evil attitude.

The males get that way in the spring (mating) and females will when their nesting. Other than that unless your eating size they'll actually walk away (the little ones run) from you.

Do you all let you dogs run loose?

Never, when we are not at home, but we will them out to do their business.

Have you ever had a similar situation?

When we move into our present home, our Dachunds would run over and bark at the old man across the road. he met us by saying "If one of those dogs bites me, I'll own your farm" Not the best welcome-to-the-neighborhood, but i got his point. Many do not like having other dogs on their property regardless. We are on good terms with this neighbor now, but our dogs do not go on his property.

Do you have a leash law in your area?
No.

What precautions should I take, if any?
IMO, dogs should never leave one's property without personal supervision. Dogs can act completely different, when they are not in their own territory.

I'm in the minority here as I let mine run loose. We'll did I guess, no dogs at the moment. Our dogs are Australian Shepards/Anatolians/Great Pyrenese types, livestock gaurd dogs. Their whole purpose in life is to fight to protect livestock. The horses tend to thereselves very well and we have 2 donkeys that run with them just in case. There isn't a coyote around that cantangle with a donkey and win. For the goats they have to have help. Poor animals couldn't defend thereselves from a flea.

I don't get it.

Would anybody let their 3-5 year old child run loose without supervision? Why let your dog with the same average inteligence do the same? "My dog is good and wouldn't hurt anyone".

We've all seen that quote on the news of any type of dog that has mauled a kid.

I can't stand anyone who lets their dog roam to the point it could end up hurting someone else or getting hit by a car. If you're on alot of acreage..well that's cool I can see that. But a couple acres is not alot.

Re: Do you let your dogs or dog run loose?

I don't know if I totally agree with you on this woodrat because you have other animals like fox, coyote, and more that can get through the fence as well. Do you have an electric fence? This is something my brother did when he fenced in his pasture to keep out the wild animals. Of course I know if you have a bunch of land fenced in that would mean allot of wire. Obviously you must have problems with other wild animals contributing to your lose of sheep. I'm not rooting for the dogs by any means but there should be a way to keep the dogs and wild animals out of that area that contains the sheep. You can't be around to protect them 24/7.

Even if you or other dog owners don't quite agree with me, the law does. In fact, Washington law requires the owner of a dog that has killed livestock to dispose of the dog himself, assuming that the stock owner didn't already kill it. And no fence is perfect when it comes to keeping out dogs and coyotes. They WILL find a way through. And yes, my pasture is fenced. I havean electric fenced night pasture that they go in at night and I never have predators there, but electric fence for the boundary lines won't work because the brush and tall grass is constantly shorting out the fence.

And the first dog I shot had already been to my place twice before in less than a year, killing sheep. The owner was totally indifferent about it. The third time it happened I was home and up early getting ready to go fishing, so I saw the dogs killing my sheep and shot one. The law here is 100% in agreement with me. It is not up to me to turn my place into a dog-proof enclosure, it is the dog owner's responsibility to keep his dogs under control.

After ten years of having sheep and having dog attacks and coyote predation for the last four years or so, I am selling the sheep in January. Unless you've been there, you have no idea how heartbreaking it is to clean up after a dog killing spree. Coyotes take one sheep at a time, every now and then, and they eat it. Dogs just kill, and they kill everything they can get a hold of. The last dog attack here damaged almost every sheep in my flock, which at that time was about 15, and killed five pregnant ewes, some of which took a couple of days to die while we tried to save them.

So if you don't want your dogs shot, keep them home. And please don't say, "oh, my dog would never do that." If he's a dog, then yes, he certainly would do that, given the right opportunity.

well, that is where the responsibility lies, but the law doesn't allow for that. It does allow for shooting the offending dog.

That's one thing I'll say about my mutt he eats what he catches. Doesn't justify live stock killing but he don't leave the fenced area around the house but I don't have to clean up the remains of critters that do get in the yard.

Interesting comparison of dogs vs cats. Seems dogs only get shot for killing livestock, cats get killed for leaving paw prints on hood of your car.:)

Re: Do you let your dogs or dog run loose?

My dogs are kept in a fenced in yard..........There is a person in our area that lets their Rott run free every couple of days. Well my dog and this Rott get into fight everytime through the fence........My dog who is much smaller in size but not additude got bit on the paw last time and hobbled around for a few days on three legs........I live in a city, Well just outside city limits but I still cant just shoot the dog due to it being a residential area......Next time I see the dog out around my fence Im gonna video it and give the people a copy and then tell them next time I will handle it through the law......next time after that.......Well? ( By the way I own a obscene amount of paintball gear......Probably considered cruelity to animals.......)

Re: Do you let your dogs or dog run loose?

hell NO! :)

not in city, and not on ranch. my dog is a continuation of life-long love affair with the norwegain elkhound breed. all they want to do when outside is be an elkhound... and that means HUNT!

at nearly 60#s KIKO is the largest i have had. he is a diesel locomotive engine. ugh! brutally strong. hard to hang on to even on leash. his short darts to leash end [nylon] is like catching a falling sack of homecrete!!

inside he is daddy's boy. sweet and kind, shedding aside. lol. can do many tricks, even can sing! lol~ but outside if off leash, doubt he would come back. well, any time soon. train him? well, maybe, but i just restrain him. to some extent, i try to let him be himself.

if loose on farm he wants to chase the cattle and horses. [not!] and of course, bark bark... etc.

he is a beautiful example of the breed. well heeled in championship genes. :) and he is such a character, too... always making us laff. he is 1 year old.

check him out.

regards
lakester

Re: Do you let your dogs or dog run loose?

Dogs ain't varmints :)

When they are in my livestock, killing everything in sight for the fun of it, they are worse than varmints.

It doesn't even compare to a few pawprints left on the hood of your car.

having just killed two dogs only a week ago, whose owners didn't see fit to keep track of them, my sense of humor about this is at a low ebb. As far as I know, the owners haven't even missed them yet; no lost dog signs at the store, or any inquiries around the neighborhood that I have heard about.

I will have to concur. Here in Boyd County, if dog/s chase and/or attack livestock, they are bought and paid for.
Even out in the County like I am, you have to keep them on your property or the dog warden will get them, period.
"iboats last chance" by the last visit to vet is at 135# of nothing but big baby.

Re: Do you let your dogs or dog run loose?

If you let your dogs run free you need to br ready for the consiquenses of their actions ( biting someone, killing another animal, chasing livestock ) all of wich in my books would result in the death of the offinding Dog. I know I know I'm just a cruel hard hearted B****rd but thats life here on the farm. I've had to put several of my own dogs down over the years. It was my fault for not being able to train them between right from wrong. As much as people would like to believe that they are human they are not! they are animals with instincts imbedded for milloins of years to preform a certan way to survive. I love my new Lab BO but certain things just cannot be tolerated. I hope he tows the line:rolleyes:
