This is my first boat, and I am old enough to have learned to ask questions of anything I dont understand before I break something hard to fix. This boat(un-named as yet) does not have any guages. I would like atleast a speedometer may be a volt guage. Are there guage kits available for this old boat?

Ed from what I understand Speedo's are pretty much useless on a boat Tach's on the other hand are good to have . I am pretty sure you just need to know what motor you have on the boat to get the right tach.

1976 Merc 850El There is a tach connector on the control box I think. Is the tach for engine RPM or Screw RPM? Are trim or plane angle guages useful? I would think Volt/Battery guage would be useful.

Ed a standard tach should work fine with your merc . I have a 1970 Merc 800 hangin off the back of my Jupiter . The tach measures engine RPM. I think a volt guage would be good to have as well trim not so much as what the boat is doing will tell you more about trim and tilt than a guage would.

Cool boat! Yeah speedometers are pretty near worthless and can be a pain to install. I'm not a fan of mine. Tach is very useful.

Welcome to the club, If you have any questions, just ask! I can get you the dimensions of the seat cushions if you need them, and let me know where you get the front winshield done, Mine has the original & we can use as a pattern and maybe we can get a discount for two!

The windshield I plan on making it my self. i have the frame and the broken pieces of the old plastic one. I think i will try plexi. and bending it myself with heat. If that don't work, I am good at cutting & shaping glass (stain glass hobby) so I will use glass and seal the middle with clear silicone. right now my focus in on the motor. Got to remove it and rewire it. Then replace the transom. Windows at this point are low on the priority list just ahead of cosmetic stuff

Ed when you get to the windows use Lexan it will last longer than Plexi and also is easier to heat form and wont scratch as easy as plexi :D. I play with stained glass to as well as ornamental iron like I have time for other hobbies with all these boats :D.

Do really need this one?

Do really need this one?

Someone in my area is offering to trade me a 1956 starcraft "Ski BoAT" for my beat up 1978 international scout.
Is this a good boat? I estimate the Scout value to be about $800

And do I really need another boat? (retorical)

Re: Do really need this one?

The trailer looks decent but that's about it. Closed bow fiberglass runabouts like that are a dime a dozen, not overly desireable, and usually rotted to the core. Plus that one has an ancient motor on it that doesn't look to be in good shape. I'd say it was worth TOPS $400 and that's being generous.

Ed EZ is right I have 2 60's era fiberglass runabouts at the moment and only one of them is truly worth investing time in . Fiberglass boats are a whole new animal to play with and not nearly as fun as the Tin cans we are all doing right now.

Re: 1970 Starcraft Star Chief

Thanks guys. I am going to pass on it. Besides, I couldn't use it to haul firewood like I do the scout. I was concerened about working with fiberglass.

Do you know where I can get a copy of the wiring diagram for my 76 breakerless merc 850? then one posted on the board here is for distributor and seems to be missing some wires that mine has. Another question too. What is the big block with all the rubber capped terminals on the starbord side of the motor?

Just a word of advice Ed, post your motor related questions in the Merc repair forum. There are many gurus in there who will answer your question in no time and they don't seem to venture into the restoration forum much.

Re: 1970 Starcraft Star Chief

Finished rewiring the motor. Merc 850 had to pull the flywheel to get at the trigger and stator assy. replaced a witre on the trigger and both yellow wires on the stator then most of the wires on the plug. put it all back together today and didnt have any parts left. I am missing one of the rubber bbots for the switch block the orange wire. I put scotch coat on it instead. Now to move on the transom, so I can remount the motor and test it and my wiring.

Any hints on removing the old soft transom in mostly one piece so it can be used as a pattern?
