Re: The Old Holiday

Andy,
As I think of it, maybe that vinyl paint could be used. I'm not sure how it would hold up if it actually got "rubbed", but it may be worth a shot
John

i guess for me its that i dont like the look of anything black with the dark green paint i have... i would rather go with contrasting colors.

John she looks great . I like the lighter rub rail as well.

Andy the vinyl paint wont work real well on the rub ril as it isnt really vinyl but more of a rubber . You will most likely have to find a white insert if thats what you want and that wont happen till this winter since SWMBO cut ya off for the year :(. I would check with Taco though and see if they carry it in the color you want and how painfull it would be to purchase it .

...thanks Rick,
I don't know what the hull was painted with, but I had a heck of a time getting that stuff off of the vinyl.

Re: The Old Holiday

Hello all, I know it's been a while but I've been terribly busy on this end. I finally got the old Holiday in the water the other day. It looked good getting there, but there was to be no fun that day.
Saturday I took it to a nearby (fifteen miles away) lake where I thought I would be all set and good to go. I had started the boat a week or so ago to make sure everything was ready, and it did actually fire up. It idled roughly, but I figured it was because it hadn't run in a while and it was loaded up. Not wanting to smoke out the neighbors I let it go until I could get it to the lake and finally clear it out. The problem was, when I got to the lake, the old gal would simply not stay running. I screwed with it for about two and a half hours before I decided to do the smart thing and give in. The more times I tried to get it go, I was actually making the problem worse.
I had my sweetheart with me and she had taken a few pics but I have yet to get them. Anyway, she showed remarkable patience with the whole ordeal as the fun day she was looking forward to went down the tubes as well.
Yesterday I called the place where I had the work done on the motor initially and he said to bring it right in so we did.
On a side note, the guy who is part owner of the shop and the service writer, came out to look the boat over and just loved it. It turns out that he likes to buy and refurbish older Boston Whalers. While I'm not sure I convinced him to give up the fiberglass, he was impressed.
I just heard from him and apparently the cause was a problem with the diaphragm type fuel pump. It seems it had a small hole in it and between me and the mechanic trying to get the thing to run, the small hole must have been getting bigger. It got to the the point where the mechanic would just squeeze the primer bulb in the fuel line and gas would pour from the carbs. The pump was replaced and I was assured the motor runs as good as new. So having said all of that, I will give it another shot on Thursday morning which is the first day I can actually go and get it. We shall see...
At any rate, I'll keep you all posted and I will try and have pictures.
Be careful,
John

Re: The Old Holiday

Thanks Rick,
I am hoping that's all behind me now. The place where it was worked on is great. They started off a few years back as a repair shop of sorts and they've grown a bit over the years. Interestingly enough, I did notice a long time ago, that there is an older Starcraft similar to my dad's a couple of houses down from the boat place. I have known it to be there for at least fifteen years and is a bit of a lawn ornament. The guy there at the boat place knows of it too and I tell you if I was in a better position to have another boat around here, I'd at least make an attempt at getting a hold of the owner. One is enough for now though.
Back to the Holiday, I am told it runs very well now and it does in fact idle and shift properly etc... so I'll have the full report on Thursday. I hope you have better luck than I did when you get to this point.

Wow John!

Inspiring work...seriously remarkable craftsmanship. The cover you made for her is just plain cool. I think I'd be counting days (a lot of them) for rain just so I could go sit inside and listen.

Sorry to hear about your OB issues. Same thing happened to me only with my two kids in attendance. Very dissaponiting day. I can only say that when it did run...you couldn't get that stupid grin off my face or my son's for hours. We got up on plane in seconds and just kept going...for hours.

Looking forward to seeing pics of her in the water...especially under power!

Strong work 61!

The "dot" in the foreground just in front of the windshield is the vent. I wish I had time to have them rechromed, at least the fill.

Anytime we put something old next to something new, it just draws our eye, doesn't it? Ha! I certainly notice the flaws in my own work.

She's a looker.

Re: The Old Holiday

Let me back up a bit. I put two coats of the Durabak on and before it fully cured, it does dry quickly by the way, I took off the trim tape but left the tape on to keep the paint off of the rubrail. I then painted over everything with the foam roller again, the Interlux light blue brightside top paint. It was a perfect match. I did have to tip a bit on the bow but it layed down nicely and there are three coats of that and in some places, the bow, there are four coats.
Okay where was I? Here's the wheel being painted a cople of days ago...

Here it is on the dash with the tape still on it...

Here it is without the tape on it and also a shot of the chrome trim and centerpiece...

John,

Where did you get the wheel/helm and the hub? Was it original/come with the boat or did you find it somewhere?

Thanks,

Wes

Re: The Old Holiday

Thanks Wes,
That cover was made by a guy I used to work with. He retired from the FD about fifteen years ago. He still does canvas work, but he's in Florida now. I understand he's still doing the canvas down there and he's still pretty busy as he does great work. Years ago my two girls used to go "camping " in it sometimes. They had a blast as I recall. There are actually four parts to it, a small part that goes from the windshield back about four ft, then there's the whole rear portion, and then the two sides with the clear plastic. They are all held together with heavy duty nylon zippers. Anyway, that thing is probably twenty years old and since it was stored in the house for most of those twenty years, it's in great shape. As far as the wheel goes, I had a wheel that came with the motor back in 89 (and still do if anyone's interested) that was black vinyl. I saw Northbeach's wheel that he found so I decided to look for myself. I think I looked under boat parts or vintage boat parts on Ebay and I found it after a while.
The wheel and helm came from a place called Green Bay Propeller if I recall. It was black and had a few chips in it, but nothing a little elbow grease and 320 grit couldn't take care of. It does have a couple of blemishes in the chrome, but nothing too drastic.
Thanks again for the nice words and be careful,
John

Re: The Old Holiday

Okay!,
I picked the old gal up this morning from the shop. The guy there showed me the old diaphragm from the fuel pump. It did in fact have a small tear in it and was promptly replaced. Once I squared away the bill, I drove it out to the lake where I was able to get it in the water by myself. A bit comical and I do have a couple of scrapes in the hull now, but nothing too major. Anyway, I did manage a picture or two before the battery in the camera died. I will try and post them tomorrow.
It idled perfectly, ran smoothly with no flat spots or anything like that. Once I got here warmed up, I "put the coals to it" and she showed about thirty three mph. I don't think it was wide open, as I didn't leave the throttle there too long. The speed wasn't with a gps, but rather with the old Airguide but it did seem as though it was going at a pretty good clip. I have a few little things I still need to tighten up, but after an hour of all different amounts of throttle, I came to the conclusion it runs very well. I also came to the conclusion I'll need the smile surgically removed from my face!
So with all that, I'll try and get pics and I'll try and get it out again soon.
Thanks guys,
John

Re: The Old Holiday

John, congratulations on what sounds like a near perfect cruise in the Old Holiday:D There's not much in life more fun than cruising in a boat.

33 is a very good clip and it sounds like you could probably muster a few more mph's if you needed. Well done from start to finish, thanks for showing us the restoration, it is very informative.
