Re: 89 Starcraft Mariner 210 CC Rebuild
Bottom Paint!!!
Since the LL did so well during our two weeks at the lake, I?ve decided to turn my attention back to the Mariner. We finally figured out how to catch the formerly elusive lake striper and now we need the ultimate fishing machine up and running.
A couple of things to report that have taken place in the middle of the hunting trip, vacation and the high pressure Liquid Limo motor swapping fiasco.
While swapping the motor I came across this shop cart at the junkyard and gave the guy 10 bucks for it.
My brother (who has the bigger welder) did a little fab work and we now have a moble stand for the big 150 Suzuki. The motor is on the stand at the boat guy?s place and I forgot to take a pic. More on that later.
Also, I took my one lone cast aluminum piece to the metal fab guys. They reverse engineered it and made me a pair for the Mariner. Problem solved! Now before you folks start pm?ing me, they were very expensive. But I?m using a bunch of saved/salvaged stuff on this boat so I really didn?t mind.
So?yesterday I got bored in the office and decided to attack the bottom/side paint portion of the project.
The Mariner came with the standard 80?s two tone blue/white with all those gawdy decals and pinstripes on the side. The bottom was bare aluminum and the years of salt exposure have turned it a sort of tea/rust brown. The plan here is to strip off all the decal/pinstripes, sand and wire brush the existing paint and mill finished bottom, and prime and paint.
I started using a small bottle propane torch and a decal scraper to remove all the decals and pinstripes. Jeez, I?d like to get my hands on the braniac who came up with that decal idea. Those stickies have been baking in the sun since 89 and did not want to let go.
Once the decals were removed, I broke out the orbital sander loaded with 150 grit pads. This did just great except for the ribs and rivits. For those I used a cheapo Home Depot wire wheel on my Ryobi cordless drill for the rivits and the ole block sander on the ribs.
Here?s a shot of the side that remains.
Continued due to too many pics????.
