Re: Need Some Help On My 1960 or 1970 Something SS Resto!!!

Been busy stripping the "Donor Boat" and tried my hand at a poly CSM layup.
Hearing about using glass and actually experiencing it are two different things!

After reading and learning for the past year I thought I had a plan. Pre drilled holes on transom. I coated (wet) the transom real good filling all screw holes.
I had pre cut some CSM and layed it down on top of the wet transom. I mixed 8oz Poly at a time (112 drops hardener) pored it on glass and spread with a 6" wide plastic putty knife. Think I should have used a squeegee? It spread fine but I found it difficult on the edges keeping the glass from peeling or shredding apart. It looked like icicles hangin off the sides. Anyway I got 1 side completed its hard as a rock. Cured for 2 days. Question..Can I spread Epoxy resin over the Poly. I have read 100 post on this but am still confused..Yeah or Neah? Pretty sure Poly wont stick/adhere to epoxy but epoxy will adhere to poly.

Moving into the new millenium with quality picture size:cool:

I put the old floor back in the boat so I could Stage the Center Console/ Leaning Post/Bench Seat. It fits very well I think. The scale is perfect, plenty of room around console and at the stern. Plenty of room up front as well for the front facing seat.

How does the position look for the console in terms of weight distribution? There is a cooler under the helm seat/ storage under front seat. I will be installing an 18 gallon gas tank which I would like to put under the floor.

That CC is going to be sweet on the rig Pauly:) Love the pole holders on the side. I definitely want a 18'-22' rig to build into a CC someday as well:D

Are you going to use that little Evinrude OB in the background as your kicker?

HA..I think this setup will work well.. I will put an anchor locker up front with a hinged top. I am also toying with a seat mount on top of the lid..with a pedastal to mount a SS grill. My buddy has one in his LUND and it works out well..sausage and eggs/potatoes in the morning...and some burgers for night fishing..or fresh striper in some foil with onions tomatoes garlic olive oil:eek:..ok I'll stop.

I have a Johnson 6hp (72 i believe)..and a 56 7.5 hp fleetwin. Fleetwin needs a bit of work (gaskets) I would enjoy having the 7.5 on it as it was my grandfathers.

Thought I'd share some pics of whats shakin in my garage..
Cut out the floor. I sanded down topside made nice and smooth. I rounded all the corners/edges. I will be using epoxy for the floor 2 coats for sure. I ordered the epoxy from ClarkCraft out of NY. Found that company as I was reding post from 2002 on evening at 2am.. $110.00 for 2 gallons. Their Website specifies this epoxy for decks and edges as its formulated to soak into the wood more efficiently.

So I decided to remove the rubrails on the center of the hull so I am able to execute my paint job with no interference. Always wondered why I had blocks of wood in place of the "arrow" at each end rubrail....heres why....

Thanks EZ..me either on the molding...now it LOOKS like a 79..lol...Man am I jealous of H A's paint job..I have a few ideas brewing for mine.

Hey you ever hear anything good or bad about that FRP panel?? My idea was to buy a sheet 4*8..and trace /cut pieces for the top of the gunnels including the bow top. Use adhesive and rivets to secure.

I also have some nice Teak that came from the donor boat that I will add to the top of each gunnel from stern to bow about 6-8' long. I will be able to attach my down riggers to it.

Pauly, that FRP isn't designed to be exposed to the sun. And if it ever catches fire a 6" x 6" peice looks like a tire dump burning.

NB,
Thank You...I guess I will turn to aluminum to reface...Have any other options you can offer? The existing aluminum is terrible..I think I can use marine tex..never used it is the consistancy putty like?

NB,
Are you saying UV rays will degrade the FRP? Or it will flash fire?

Dont plan on it catching fire I would think smoke inside a school room is worse than on the water.

Yes Pauly, the UV will degrade it. And no it won't flash fire but we accidentally got a small peice in a burn pile here and my gosh the black smoke and fumes were horrendous!!!! The stuff gasses off real bad when it burns.

are you talking about the top of the gunwales? and the foreward deck area?

Why not just replace with aluminum. It couldn't be that expensive.

NB,

yes the top of the gunwales and bow top. I will likely use aluminum.
