Re: My 79 Starcraft SS

Well that defiantly looks like a great deal. Only thing is I see a problem with is if you are going to sell the hull. Here in GA. you have to have a Notarized Bill of Sale, and if possible the DNR registration card from PO in order to get it in your name or registered in your name for resale. Not sure about where you are but here in a case like yours it has to be abandoned for at least 7 years to become the property of the land owner where the boat or vessel is abandoned. I went through this same thing on that free boat I got from a lady where her boyfriend left it at her house. She had to write a letter stating how long(7yrs)and have it notarized and a bill of sale notarized before I could get it registered. I did get it :D

Re: My 79 Starcraft SS

I am in CT. I wasn't going to register this boat, I was going to strip it and scrap it.....Untill I found out that Sea Craft Boat Hulls are some of the best in the business. I haven't yet dug into her yet to see if there is any damage below deck. There is a little water visible in the gas tank well below deck. I just may keep this one...for fishing..and make the SS a family cruiser again...
The wife made me pose for the picture..

I am finding out about registering the boat..If a bill of sale is enough to get it done..

Pulled the boat out of the garage and my daughter helped me scrub down the inside. We used dawn and warm water. It cleaned up really well.

Re: My 79 Starcraft SS

Let it dry overnight and then I drilled out all the rivets holding the stringers on, alot of them were loose or missing. I went with a bigger rivet, used 3/16". They are solid as a rock now. Then I opened up the Gluvit. (smells like low tide) I mixed it in 2 batches and had plenty to go around. Hit it heavy under the splashwell...I had to take pics for documentation...so i might as well share these action shots.. Covered boat and put a space heater inside to speed things up.

Re: My 79 Starcraft SS

I had some extra time so I began to take out the transom...wow..what the hell is this?? never seen this before...pegboard sandwiched between 2 pieces of plywood. The 3 pieces of wood I pulled out were just lying on top of the ROTTEN lower portion of the transom..how the hell did this hold a motor..

Re: My 79 Starcraft SS

OK..been productive this past long weekend. Removed the splash pan to get at the SOAKEN WET transom. It took about 4 hours of chiseling and layer by layer on 1/4 of the transom. I was then able to pry out the remaining 3/4 of it pretty easy:redface: This was a huge step for me and I fely pretty darn good:D. So My last Starcraft ended up in a dumpster:eek:, the transom beat me up.(glass boat) see pic.
I have a problem. I need to hear some suggestions from the grand wizards at what my options are for the HOLE that appeared after removing the transom. Much corrosion (white) ate away a 2.5 inch round area above the knee brace.(see pic) here is what I am planning on doing. I was going to bring my template to Yarde Metals and have them cut me a piece of 1/16" aluminum to fit back into transom. I can A: have a nice piece of diamond Plate cut, same shape and attach to the OUTSIDE of the transom. Or regular aluminum sheet on the inside of the transom. I do have a 1/16th available to fit my new transom on the inside with the aluminum sheet. Help me out here guys and let me hear some suggestions with what you see in the pics. How to attach..Rivet? I have more coming but need this addressed ASAP so i can get that transom in.

I'm no expert but I (and Cheapboatkev, we discussed) think you should skin it from the inside with regular aluminum. Clean up the existing really well. Attach the new metal with a lot of gluvit. Kev thinks you should skin it from the outside as well but I don't know about that. It seems your problem is largely in the middle. Have a nice big diamond plate motor mount plate made for the outside.

Tim Fives and I got this same wood for the same price at HD. It's nice stuff. We went back last week to get Tim some 1/2" for other things he needs to build in his boat and HD's stuff was crap! Ended up going to Lowes.

Thank You, That works for me.

I will get it moving forward tomorrow. Have to get more Gluvit. Can I use epoxy resin? I can get that locally.

Depots wood is no good usually buy at Lowes myself...I was surprised to see the A/C looking good...

I don't think so. I'd think you'd need something with some more substance to it than that.

By then way, the next time I'm in your area and I notice all the street signs are missing....I'll know where they went :)

Re: Need Some Help On My SS Resto!!!

I am seeing the

"Hole in my aluminum transom"

issue alot!!

I have a similar issue with holes (read that as multiple) same size or bigger.

However, Mine are not from corrosion so I am not losing structural strength.

I say the reskin inside, and yes to the diamond plate for exterior...

I like the idea of the DP better than using another piece of plywood on my rig!

Oh Oh...
That may be what I needed! I think if I make my outer mount big enough it will cover most of my big holes and provide me a good backer for filling with 5200??
