Re: Need Some Help On My SS Resto!!!

Jeremy how was that DP mounted to the transom?

I have been reading alot of others are seeing this same issue. Some even have ribs corroded. Bad ground? salt Water? perhaps PT on the transom..the white crap on my transom was almost 1/4 inch in areas.

EZ..should I prime the aluminum with zinc primer before I gluvit to attach inside skin?

Gluvit should be applied to the bare aluminum...then it can be sanded and painted if needed. It needs to get into all the little seams and whatnot so you won't want to coat the metal first with anything.

Huron I am putting a skin on the inside of the transom. i am using the Gluvit to adhere the new ski to the old. I have to wire wheel off the corrosion first before gluvit. So your saying no need to Primer/protect the original inside skin, the gluvit will aid in that as well as offer adhesion for the new skin/

Yes. I wouldn't prime it if I was going to Gluvit the sh!t out of it.

I don't know yet exactly how my plate is attached. Probably some adhesive and some bolts. When I'm done painting the bottom/sides I'll flip her back over and start on the transom.

...I don't know yet exactly how my plate is attached. ...

I want to know when you figure that out too...

Anything has to be better than the 1/4" plywood that was on the back of mine...

Azonic, when I redid the Jupiter's transom, I left the outer "plate" off completely. There's really no need for it. I'll only be keeping this one because Hey, it's diamond plate :)

I did not figure it was required...

I was told it needed to be there to protect the outer skin...

That's the whole dilema....protect it from what? You rarely see an equivalent on a glass boat. I can see the purpose of them on little boats where the motor is often removed and reinstalled with screw clamps but for a larger boat with a permanently mounted motor? The only value I can see the plate providing is if your transom rots out the plate can keep your motor bracket from pushing in and cracking the skin. But as we know, you got bigger issues at that point.

in my case..i believe it did more harm than good. The decay is concentrated in that exact area..whether or not the salt trapped inside the wood led to that who knows but it is what it is..DP will go in its place on the outside.

Re: Need Some Help On My SS Resto!!!

K Been busy stripping the donor boat. What a pain in da a**!!! Pulling all the wires and controls through a little cubby space. Madone....my aching back..

I have the transom together, screwed and glued..and belt sanded . it fits very well. I am going to wait untill I have the boat painted to install it.

A question for the SS Crew..I have noticed EZ's, Hurons, and WVmedic dont have that lower rub rail on their boats. I looked at the brochure for 79 and it shows the boat without that rubrail as well. I want to do a similar paint job, original like Hurons..I think its badass..So anyone know why some had it some dont? I can remove it but it is riveted to the inside rail that supports the sides. I can drill out and rerivet if I move forward with it.

Because they did away with that strip sometime in the 70's.....and to be completely honest with you....ain't no way in heck your boat is a '79.

Re: Need Some Help On My SS Resto!!!

USCG site states serial #'s less than 12 characters are pre 1973. 1973 manufacturers were required to have 12 digits....so...I was told when purchased the first 3 #'s were the month..then the year built...979345.. or NOT.. who cares its a STARCRAFT..

Haha I see you changed your thread title. Yeah the logo kinda throws me off. It must be early 70's. With your lapstrake pattern and that extra trim piece, it's definitely older than my '76.

Pauly here is the number for Starcraft customer service 1-(574) 831-2103, they might be able to help you out with the hull ID number.

They will answer Smoker craft and something else but it is Starcraft also.

Jeff.

Re: My 79 Starcraft SS

Help me out here guys and let me hear some suggestions with what you see in the pics. How to attach..Rivet? I have more coming but need this addressed ASAP so i can get that transom in.

Do a search for my Grumman 184 restore thead.

I had exactly the same thing.

My opinion.
  • Grit blast the area.
  • Prep the area with West Systems something 680 aluminum prep kit which is an acid wash and then alodine.
  • Use West Systems G/Flex epoxy system (655 is thickened), and what I used to bond doubler plates into the boat. I also coated the entire inside of the transom, which had some corrosion, but not as bad as yours, over the whole thing to protect it from further corrosion.

I thru bolted new my corners to address the corrosion in my boat.
Where your problem is, rivets my be enough.

I'm local enough (just north of North Granby, CT), to see what my projoct looks like.

PM me for a phone number if you want to come up or to talk.

mike
