Re: My 79 Starcraft SS

I received the gluvit and will be prepping and spreading if I can get the garage cleaned out. Tomorrow ins a trip to NYC with the family..Rockettes christmas show Radio city Music hall.

I have been looking at some outboards. I have never priced anything above a 7.5hp..so the prices are a bit of a surprise. I'm looking for feedback pros and cons of what each has to offer. I am leaning towards the 70hp Johnson for 1600.00 no tnt ..lotta coin ?..

If I were you I would first try to find something local. Then you can go and look at it do a compression test on it and see and hear it run. Maybe even if it's still on a boat water test it. But also look for rotten glass boats with good motors.
Whatever the end biding is on that green Johnson 85hp is you have to add at least
$350.00 Standard Flat Rate Shipping to the price.

jim..the 350 shipping reaaly blows..are the buy it now prices indicative of the going market prices?

We have a few marinas on the CT RIVER I will check out for motors. Not a big rush for that now..just wanna be sure I have $$ in the budget.

Well what I am saying is just look around like on your local craigslist. You never know you might find a real sweet deal on a rotten boat with a decent motor for just a couple hundred bucks. Here is a sample i just brought this home the other day I paid $175.00 for the Boat, Motor, and Trailer. The tires and wheels are worth at least $200+ (the tires and wheels are brand spanking new)Yes the motor needs some work but for that price it was worth it.:D

Now thats a good deal..Nice..I hear what your saying..Just threw a glass boat in a dumpster..I did save the 40hp big twin w/controls off it.
Unfortunately..dont think a 1965 40 hp will get me more than 20mph??

Yea just remember always haggle the price and check everything out good. Like I said do a compression test at least if you can"t get a lake run. Compression tester is pretty cheap and I think some Auto Parts rent them.

Re: My 79 Starcraft SS

Pauly if you are rated for 85 HP stick to it our Starcrafts are quite light compared to glass boats and an 85 will get her moving just fine . I have an 80HP merc and have ben told 40-45 MPH is possible with it .

Re: My 79 Starcraft SS

I am going to see an 84 Merc 85hp. What is the proper compression? I do understand that it needs to be equal on each cylinder. I will also check the lower end oil. It should look clear not milky and have no particles/shavings of any kind. What else would be a tell tale sign of abuse or not mantaining properly? I will not be able to "run" the motor as the gentlemen is very sick. He says I can put some gas in the cylinders to show it does pop over. He also offered his compression tester to use. What am I leaving out?

Check for a nice blue spark on all plugs to make sure the coils and power packs are ok.

Re: My 79 Starcraft SS

I have been busy looking for a motor. Jimbc got me searching for "deals" on CL. I was looking for a CC, with a motor. I would remove the console and motor and make it work for the SS. Yesterday morning saw an add on CL, 16' CC, 70 HP Merc tnt Galvanized Karavan trailer EX-Boyfriend left it in her driveway been sitting for 2 years $800.00 No pictures were posted..so I email her at 7am..she responds by 7:20..has pics to me by 8am. I am in her driveway by 10 am. She doesn't know I was going to strip it clean and probably toss it. So I go through the" well its been outside uncovered, (she had no key for the motor") It needs this and that.bla bla bla..
I offer her $300.00..she says Great..take it away.:D

Here are some pics of what I get for the money.

Re: My 79 Starcraft SS

I figure :
Center console- $350
Motor- $750- $1000
Ladder-$100.00
Kicker Mount- $100.00
Trailer- $300-$500
Flare Gun- 47.00 (price tag on it)
Fused Switch Plate- $100.00
Gas tank..bla bla bla..
Thats all Mahogany Wood that I will be refinishing and using on the SS.

Now I have to get my butt in gear pillaging this boat.
I could probably run this how it is for a few years...but glass aint my thing right now..
The boats a Fisherman by SeaCraft it is a solid boat well made..Thanks Jimbc for the motivation..

Re: My 79 Starcraft SS

Pauly you stole that thing :D . That motor and controls around here would fetch an easy $1200-$1500 anyday . This is why I keep telling other tincanners to get a good motor " cheap " look for a bad glass boat with one attatched :D. You will get your money back out of that selling off what you dont want and still have all you need for your boat :D.

Re: My 79 Starcraft SS

Pauly I just bought a '79 SS as well and splashed her yesterday. You will be happy with a 70hp on that for sure. I have the same OB as Rick (80hp Merc) and even at 3/4 throttle the boat planes out and scoots along about 25-30mph:D

Good luck with your SS:)

Nice steal on that old CC. Lots of nice usable parts on that. Love the trailer and the console. Going by looks alone, I'd agree the merc is somewhere around '87.
