How can i tell if my boat is water logged? And i heard it's not as common in smaller boats than in bugger boats. My boat is a 14' fiberglass edson.I am trying to narrow down why it comes out of the water so hard and so far i know the engine is running good.

Re: water logged??

Brown rust looking stains running from fittings and or screws on the transom, soft squishy deck areas where you step, transom flex when you apply pressure to the outboard, there always seems to be a bit of brown water collecting in the bilge, even after wiping dry, drill a 2" hole in the deck and it fills with water, drill a 1/4" hole in transom and water pours out.

Weigh the boat and check against NADA info

Not sure Nada is acurate enough for that. I think Nada posts dry weight with nothing in the boat. Either drill a hole in the bottom of the tansom or remove an exisiting screw and watch the brown water pour out!

Nada posts dry weight, I weighed mine, factored in the motor weight, trailer weight, the fuel tank was near empty, the calcs came out pretty close to determine the foam was dry.

Tip the boat up as high as you can on the trailer and if the water continues to run into the bilge it is probably waterlogged.

Mine got that way and when it was still draining after 2 days I figured I had a problem.

What makes you think it is other than it won't plane like you expected?

Could be nothing wrong at all and that is just how the boat runs.

Re: water logged??

Guys -- what does 'waterlogged' mean?

It means that the boat has a flaw such as a fracture or hole in the hull or deck and water is being absorbed by flotation foam and structural wood. This causes the boat to weigh more and eventually deterioration of the boat integrity.

Re: water logged??

Poor performance is a good sign of waterlogged foam in a fiberglass boat. I bought a 16 ft Marlin a few years ago and ended up rebuilding the whole interior. I took 700 pounds of soaked foam and plywood to the refuse site. The type of foam used will not dry out, even once removed from the hull, you can squeeze water out of it a year later. Any glass boat that sits outside uncovered will eventually become waterlogged.

Re: water logged??

so i just drilled two 1/4" holes in the bottom of the transom and some water came trickling out but then it seemed to slow down.Should the water pour out or just seep out?

Re: water logged??

The transom is wood sandwiched between two layers of fiberglass. The glass secures the wood in place and keeps the wood dry. If water gets in, the wood will rot. Any water seeping/pouring from test holes means the f/glass is comprimized(sp) and rot is a likelyhood.
