While beating on my reed adapter plate to dislodge the gasket from the engine, I accidentally hit one of the tiny hose barbs on the side and broke it off. I'm not sure if those were a press fit or what but need to know if anyone has ever replaced one. Also need to find a suitable replacement barb.

Guessing they are pressed…given there are no means (hex) which to screw it in

Yep, if I could find a same size replacement with threads, I could drill and tap right next to the original after plugging the original.

Prior to getting that link I ordered standard hose barbs (10 pcs) from Amazon, for $6.98 + tax. I cut down both ends, the press in end shorter with a small lead in. Pressed in, no problem. Now I am waiting for the large reed adapter plate so I can reassemble with the cleaned and rebuilt carbs. All three float valve needles were stuck in their seats, so all were replaced.

The plate and reeds are off the motor, not replacing. The barb is straight through. The only one that is one way is at the bottom of the plate.

strange?.. never have seen a later, production model with that type (screw-in) bib?.. only on very early models (80, 81's)....

I have a new idea as follows, I'm running the five-petal reed plate to match the front half. That’s the same style as the pressed-in bib shown in the picture. The seven-petal wouldn't line up right with this setup.

reed plate and front half gotta match.. merc only built one 2.4 seven petal "production" model front and that was in '80 and '81.. they only built one 7 petal "production" 2.5 seven petal in '91.. other than those all other production motors were five's............

On a related subject, I saw a video of a fellow making reed petals out of spring steel using salt water electrolysis. He primed the spring steel with self-etching primer and after it dried, traced the outline of the reed petals using an exacto knife to scratch away the paint along the outlone of the petals and center hole.

He then put a ss plate into plastic pan with the salt water. He scratched off some paint on the spring steel and attached the pos wire of a 3A battery charger to it, and the neg wire to the ss plate. 20 hours later, the spring steel that had the paint scraped off and was in the salt water was eaten away, and the reed petals could be separated with fingers.

Since utube is not known for its factual content, does anyone know if this would actually work? I had thought they used acid for this kind of etching.

Those small barbs are often press-fit. Check with a Mercury dealer using your serial number for the exact part. Online marine parts sites like Crowley Marine or a salvage yard might also have it.

Yesterday was warmer, around 50 F, so I installed the reeds and carbs. By the time I was done hooking everything up it was pretty dark. I haven't tested the oil injection yet, so to be safe I plugged in a tank of mixed. Engine started right up and was very smokey. Will running mixed fuel along with oil injection produce twice the amount of smokiness? Does it sound right, on the muffs?

Yes, running premix and oil injection will burn more oil and lead to more smoke. Oil injection on carb motors simply injects the oil into the fuel line leading to the carb.

However, on 2 cycle DI motors, the oil is injected into the crankcase, and it is substantially less oil volume. Also on 2 cycle DI motors, pure gasoline is injected into the combustion chambers, so premixing oil with the gasoline in a 2 cycle DI engine does nothing to lubricate the engine.

Right. The premix is because I didn't know if the oil injection was going to work, so I was being safe.
