    Scott Outboards Any Good?

Curious if any of these are worth trying to get running?

69 Johnson 4hp mis-fire at high speeds (weak spark on one cylinder)

I put a neon light spark tester on a 69 Johnson that runs rough (as in low power) at medium to high speeds and noticed that one cylinder lights the bulb up solid and bright, but the other I can tell is so so (kind of dim). The coil tests ok (ohm meter) but I realize that the dielectric could be...

1970 Johnson 115HP Ignition system. How does it work?

I'm familiar with coils and points but have no idea on the bigger engines. How does the old Johnson ignition system function? Would this be a similar ignition setup? http://www.cdielectronics.com/basic-ignition-system/ Is a 1970 115 a decent engine?

1995 Johnson 30HP 2 cycle idles smooth; smooth at WOT, Rough in Middle

My dad has a 95 Johnson 30 Horse and it has a pretty rough range in the middle but low and high are great. What could his problem be?

First start takes about 10 pulls. Next starts 1/2 pull. Anything wrong?

I just got a 69 Johnson 4HP. I cleaned the carb and tore down and inspected the fuel pump (looks very old but seems to work without leaks) then set the points (had new coils, points, and condensers) using the ohm meter method (set to the tick mark before zero on the timing plate). It starts...

    Coil/Magneto to Flywheel Gap???

I couldn't find anything on how to set this gap. There's about .040" of wiggle room on the screws. Obviously, too far away and no pickup, too close and it'll rub. On a Briggs and Stratton it's set external to the flywheel via a playcard. How do you set this gap on an OMC outboard?

Johnson 4HP with 50psi compression but runs pretty well.

I just found a 69 Johnson 4HP that looks a lot like an old lightwin. It starts first pull when warmed up and seems to idle and run fairly well. But it reads 50psi compression on both cylinders. I'm not positive my gauge is giving the full value but it's reading 50 on both cylinders (consistent)...

old Yamaha/Mariner 2A 2 cycle 2 HP. Enough for a square stern Canoe?

I just picked up one of these for $100. I'm hoping it works as it should when we get it into the river. Will this be enough to push a wide square stern 15' Fiberglass canoe? If I need more (just need enough to go upstream about 5 MPH or so), is there anything I can do to give it a little more...

Please explain the fuel supply system on these old metal cased Johnyrudes

How do the fuel supply systems work with these engines? I've heard someone say that the tanks are pressurized. Is this true? I know my current Force 125 has a diaphragm fuel pump on the side of the block that draws fuel from the tank and pressurizes it to fill the carb bowls. Are the OMC...

125 Force produces Lots of smoke. Normal?

I notice that I get a decent amount of smoke with my Force 125HP. Is this normal? I'd say when I accellerate to WOT, I leave a cloud of blue smoke about the volume of a 15 passenger/cargo van. And there's always some smoke on the water even at idle.

2009 Mercury 2.5/3.5HP or an old Mariner or Evinrude/Johnson?

Seems like these new Mercury Tohatsu motors are $300-$400 used and with low hours. I see old Mariners in the same price range (sometimes maybe $100 less). I see old Lightwins from $100-$300. Would I be better off with a new Merc or an older unit mentioned? I've read some bad things about the...

How are the small Chrysler/Force engines? Looking for something cheap for a canoe.

I've got a 125 Force and am now looking for a 3.5-5 horse for our canoe. Curious how these are. I'm also considering a lightwin (50's evinrude). Easy maintenance, good reliability and without having to scrounge to find regular use items is important. I don't enjoy searching for unobtainium or...

Evinrude/Johnson Lightwin still worth it's weight? Possible to keep these up?

I grew up seeing these things on lakes and they were old then. Now that I'm in my 30's and my boys are fishing, I'm looking for something small to put on our square backed fiberglass canute (canoe boat). I appreciate old iron and have used plenty of old Briggs engines but what I found with them...

Who Made the late 80's Sears/Eska 9.9 engines?

Curious who made these? Chrysler/Force? Are they decent?

Best small outboard? (2-5HP 2 stroke)

Curious if the Yamaha/Mariners are good ones? I've got a Force 125 on the bass boat and am looking for something small for the square stern canoe. It'd be nice if it were light weight for loading.

Normal for carbs to leak when primed?

When my Force 125 is primed, I notice drips of gas on the outside of the carbs coming from above the bowls. Is this normal? I also notice it when running trimmed.

89 Force 125 Timing at 0 when idling. Normal?

I checked with the plugs out at WOT and got 28 degrees. With the engine running, I see 0 degrees at idle. Is this ok?

Not happy with the generic "change your impeller" suggestion

Not to vent but I notice here and elsewhere it's pretty commonplace to see the suggestion of "change your impeller" every time someone buys a used motor. I understand the need for new impellers but after spending an hour trying to get the lower unit splines to go back into position in the motor...

New To Me Force 125 was Run w/o Water Pump Gasket. Am I OK?

I was about to reassemble the water pump after changing the impeller and noticed there was no gasket between the housing and the plate below it (part #14 in the picture). It was pumping water from the exhaust snout and spitting the two weep holes but this does concern me a little. Am I likely to...

seal where water pump attaches to standpipe?

I have a Force 125 and noticed that the mating point between the standpipe and water pump is just a white plastic sleeve. Should there be any kind of seal here?
