Burned valve or worse 1997 5.7 LX

Head is off and I may have gotten off lucky as it appears the piston is ok. Interesting note is the the head bolts were not as tight as I would expect them to be. Pulled both heads while I was at it. I( want to do a leak down on the cylinders so I can evaluate the rings, will check all of them...

Burned valve or worse 1997 5.7 LX

Cooling system is fine, fuel system is fine, I believe it got hot because of detonation. Maybe broken oil ring that lowered fuel octane... possible lean and why just that cylinder? I ran 75 miles to get back after #3 lost compression. Arent the module's/advance curve specific to application...

Burned valve or worse 1997 5.7 LX

I did not get a chance to pull the head this evening. Hoping for the best and expecting the worst. Big thing is WHY, so I can avoid it from happening again. I need to check the knock sensor, I was under the impression if it was inoperative it would hold back the advance....? I was looking at...

Burned valve or worse 1997 5.7 LX

0K158784 Alpha I ~ 570 hours on rebuild (not by me) Saturday we were wrapping up a week long trip and had good weather, running From Unakwik to Naked Island, about 25 miles, we had good water and was running hard, ~ 3800-3950 RPMS. Typically run 3200 to 3600 sometimes 3800, have recently seen...

Fuel burn with 5.7 LX mercruiser, 24' Boat

Very true, and so it is with props, I am always on the hunt for the perfect prop... LOL Fuel mileage doesn't seem to change much, even at high RPM is still runs 2.2 MPG. It may be slightly underpropped with this new prop. But just slightly and acceleration is OK when getting on step. Its a...

Fuel burn with 5.7 LX mercruiser, 24' Boat

The mains did not change, reused the original jet, which is typical.

Fuel burn with 5.7 LX mercruiser, 24' Boat

I put some more hours on it last weekend, weather was decent so I got the mixture screws and idle a little tighter. Was actually sunny and good water conditions so I had a chance to see what RPM's the secondary's came in at. At 4200 that start flowing fuel, the active throttle plate opens...

Fuel burn with 5.7 LX mercruiser, 24' Boat

Closer to 300 HP, but those numbers are pretty close. conditions day to day can make a big difference on fuel use. Have not seen 4800, 4600 but not 4800 and GPH is not 21 GPH. Typically average 2.2 MPG with the boat. Cruising 3200/3800. Interestingly enough more RPM/MPH does not seem to...

New elbows on a 5.7 LX.

Drilled and tapped for the drain, had to get out the big dog vise...! I did not R&R the risers and gasket between the riser and the mannie, I did get a small amount of coolant seepage between the two, I may pay for it latter....! If I start seeing some corrosion I will have to redo. Busy at work...

New elbows on a 5.7 LX.

I know how much you guys like pics and want to see my drain c o c k. The weep hole was defintely plugged and I opened it with a awl. The piece was cracked and I pried it off the rest of the way so I could examine the cavity and thickness of the cast. These are original form 96/97, however low...

New elbows on a 5.7 LX.

I finally had a chance to examine the parts and there was a note card with the elbow that states the drain is no longer needed as the elbows are self draining. Sure enough there is a weep hole on the bottom that would theoretically drain, as long as its not rusted/crusted shut like my old one...

New elbows on a 5.7 LX.

I could drill and tap and install the drains, its cast so easy enough to do, just wondering why they were eliminated. Thanks, it was a 5 year rebuild, glad it wasn't any bigger...!

New elbows on a 5.7 LX.

I could pull the hose that feeds the elbow from the HE, easier to unscrew the drain. I guess the real question is, are the new and the old merc elbows the same internally? Or did they modify the casting somehow?

New elbows on a 5.7 LX.

1996 5.7 LX, Last week I made a trip to Homer for some king fishing. On startup i discovered the port side elbow had cracked directly under tne drain i forgot to open before i parked it outside in below freezing temperatures. Fortunately I was able to get a brand new OEM elbow from the local...

Fuel burn with 5.7 LX mercruiser, 24' Boat

Finally put a few hours on the carb rebuild last weekend, ran a few hundred miles and hours of trolling. I would say it is/was a success as the csrb seems to handle incremental throttle inputs nicely and can raise the rpm a small amount at a time. Suspect the new needles are helping with that...

Fuel burn with 5.7 LX mercruiser, 24' Boat

Idle at 650 and increasing RPM to under 1000 RPM is the difficult spot to move just enough to change speed, currents are pretty viscous in lower cook inlet and typically try to fish slack but sometimes we keep fishing through a tide change and often adjusting speed slightly, or trying to...

Fuel burn with 5.7 LX mercruiser, 24' Boat

Then I installed the rest of the linkage, adjusted the accelerator pump and put the carb back on the motor, I cranked it a few times to fill the bowls and let is sit over night so I could check for leaks before I fired it up. The idle needles looked ok, but I cleaned them up with some 600 to...

Fuel burn with 5.7 LX mercruiser, 24' Boat

Next I assembled it and taped it up so I could bead blast it. Then more cleaning with hot soapy water, compressed air, hot water, air and finally a good visual to make sure passages are were clear. Then final reassembly, tape if off again, clean with acetone, warm in the oven, spray with self...

Fuel burn with 5.7 LX mercruiser, 24' Boat

Throttle shafts were nice and snug in the body, so no need to remove them. Floats were air tight, needle rods had what looked like some wear/corrosion near the tip. That's when I discovered merc used 3 step rods at some point. No longer variable and Mikes Carb did not have any advice on what...
