350 EFI Intake manifold gasket question

Thanks for the reply. I just got off the phone with Felpro technical support and the guy told me to install the gasket with the raised portion toward the intake manifold.

350 EFI Intake manifold gasket question

There is a raised portion around the ports with a red coating. The gaskets are not labeled as to which side goes toward the head. Is it critical? Should they be installed raised portions toward the manifold or the head? I am thinking raised portion to the manifold so the gaskets sit flat on...

Assembling exhaust manifolds, risers and elbows - Loctite 510?

Those who are saying use Avation gasket sealer/perfect seal, etc. I have compacted graphite gaskets - Do I coat both sides, just around the bolt holes and/or the threads? Below is the screen shot from the service manual which I believe refers to the paper gaskets. The Aviation sealant is much...

Assembling exhaust manifolds, risers and elbows - Loctite 510?

The gaskets I purchased were the compacted graphite type - Quicksilver OEM so they're going on dry. The gasket type must have changed since the service manual was printed.

Assembling exhaust manifolds, risers and elbows - Loctite 510?

I have a container of that. It is the "perfect seal" equivalent. I'm assuming on both sides of the gaskets? The gaskets are the compacted graphite type gaskets and usually, those types don't require any sealant.

Assembling exhaust manifolds, risers and elbows - Loctite 510?

The Mercruiser service manual #24 (for the 5.0 and 5.7 engines) says to use Loctite 510 around all holes in the riser/elbow gaskets. There was no evidence of any sealer when I took them apart to test them for leaks. I have Loctite 515 which is very similar. Should I use it or assemble them dry?

1997 Mercruiser 5.7 EFI blown head gasket

When I install the distributor in the new engine, I am going to route the wires correctly so that it doesn't cause any confusion down the road. It is strange that someone would go through the trouble of re-routing the plug wires vs. correcting the distributor position.

1997 Mercruiser 5.7 EFI blown head gasket

Thank you for the identification! I would have eventually figured it out when I installed the distributor and ignition coil but it has been bugging me ever since I discovered it laying in the bilge. $82.00 is highway robbery for that part! I'd bet you could get it from a GM dealer cheaper if...

1997 Mercruiser 5.7 EFI blown head gasket

I pulled the engine yesterday afternoon and am starting to transfer the components to the remanufactured engine. A short wire harness was laying in the bilge after the engine was removed. Pictures are attached. Can someone tell me where it is connects? The wire colors are red and brown.

1997 Mercruiser 5.7 EFI blown head gasket

The plot thickens... I purchased a remanufactured long block from Michigan Motorz and picked up the engine yesterday afternoon. I spoke to their master mechanic for quite some time discussing the failure. I wanted to make sure I found and corrected the issue that caused the problem so I...

1997 Mercruiser 5.7 EFI blown head gasket

Since the head and the existing block are ruined due to the fire slotting in between cylinders 3 & 5, I am going to swap out the bad engine with a remanufactured engine. The existing block and heads are going to be returned for the core refund. The exhaust manifolds do not have any rust on the...

1997 Mercruiser 5.7 EFI blown head gasket

I'll take a look at the head in addition to testing the exhaust manifolds. My boat has been in freshwater all its years and has not been run in saltwater. Usually, engines run in saltwater have issues with the risers and manifolds.

I am definitely going to replace the coupler as I do not want to go through this experience again. I hope to test my manifolds today - install a piece of rubber in between the riser and the manifold, fill the them with water and connect shop air to the hose to see if they produce bubbles. My...

Here are some photos of the tops of the pistons. The leftmost picture is an overall shot of the 1-3-5-7 bank with #1 on the left side. The middle picture is a view of cylinders 1,3 &5 and the rightmost picture is a view of #5 on the left and #7 on the right. The piston top of cylinder 5 has...

1997 Mercruiser 5.7 EFI blown head gasket

I am shopping for a new/remanufactured engine. I do not want to go through this crap in three months or less. The slot is about .060" deep in the block and head. Strange that there were no symptoms other than some hesitation/stumbling on prior cruises before the cylinders went dead on the...

1997 Mercruiser 5.7 EFI blown head gasket

I got the intake manifold removed and the port side head removed - bad news... There's a channel burned in the web between cylinders 3 & 5 and also the head. I talked to the machine shop that I was going to use to have the valves reconditioned and he said this is a common problem with either...

1997 Mercruiser 5.7 EFI blown head gasket

The #1 cylinder is on the compression stroke. and the slot on the balancer aligns with the feature on the composite. I was just clarifying the feature on the timing cover. When I did the air test on cylinder #3, cylinder #3 was at TDC with both valves closed.

12 intake mounting bolts on my engine - looks like I have the non-Vortec heads. Are those less prone to cracking vs. the Vortec heads?

1997 Mercruiser 5.7 EFI blown head gasket

No - I am asking if the feature in the timing cover just to the right of the slot in the balancer is the pointer. It looks like a white "U" on the curved rib on the timing cover. Usually there is a metal notched scale with the degrees before or after top dead center stamped into it. This...

When I put the #1 cylinder on it's compression stroke, the notch on the balancer aligned with the feature to the right which I assume is the pointer?
