1997 Mercruiser 5.7 EFI blown head gasket

I made some progress this evening. I got the exhaust manifolds and the distributor removed. I also verified the valves are opening and closing on the cylinders with no compression (#3 & #5). When I put #3 at top dead center on the compression stroke and applied shop air through the #3 spark...

1997 Mercruiser 5.7 EFI blown head gasket

I should be able to tell if it is a Vortec or non-Vortec this evening based on the quantity of intake bolts per Bondo's description. At this point, I don't know if it is the headgasket, all I know is I have zero compression on two adjacent cylinders and am assuming it's a headgasket issue.

1997 Mercruiser 5.7 EFI blown head gasket

The temp. gage never went above 170°. When I had the plugs out, they all looked on the black shade. They weren't grey which would indicate overheating. The prop is the same prop that's been on the boat when I bought it eight years ago and over 1000 hours of use. I need to get it apart and...

1997 Mercruiser 5.7 EFI blown head gasket

Seven years ago, it got to 190° and the alarm went off so I shut it off to clear the water intake. From that point until a couple of days ago, it's been fine. At this point, the only thing I know is that I have zero compression in cylinders 3 & 5 and I assume it's a headgasket. I definitely...

1997 Mercruiser 5.7 EFI blown head gasket

Thanks for the information! Hopefully the rain stops so I can start tearing it down tomorrow evening. If it is the pre-vortec, are those heads prone to cracking like the vortec heads are?

1997 Mercruiser 5.7 EFI blown head gasket

I don't believe the heads on my engine are the Vortec heads - the HP at the prop is 220 and I think the LX version of the 5.7 had 250 HP at the prop. would have the Vortec heads but I won't be sure until I get the heads removed. Those were the two of the available engine choices for '97 that...

1997 Mercruiser 5.7 EFI blown head gasket

The engine has about 1750 hours on it - not sure what the recommended valve service is but the way shops are booked where I live, I probably wouldn't get the heads back before the end of the boating season. I need to be ready for a trip on July 1st so just changing the head gaskets is going to...

1997 Mercruiser 5.7 EFI blown head gasket

I'm seeing differences in the OEM head gaskets under the same 27-75611 part nos. One is an all steel gasket, another version is steel rims near the cylinder bores with a graphite type gasket and another version that looks like an automotive gasket. I am wondering what caused the gasket to go...

1997 Mercruiser 5.7 EFI blown head gasket

That's what I am seeing when looking at photos of the parts. The intake gaskets are also different between the marine and the automotive version - the auto version has one of the ports restricted with a small hole vs. open in the marine application. The only time the engine overheated was...

1997 Mercruiser 5.7 EFI blown head gasket

On the way in from boating this afternoon, my boat began to lose power and I could tell that it had a bad misfire. After getting it home, I did a compression test and below are the results: 1: 170 psi 2: 165 psi 3: 0 psi 4: 160 psi 5: 0 psi 6: 160 psi 7: 150 psi 8: 145 psi, 150 psi wet after...

    Cracked trailer fender

I agree - if the tires were that bad, it would be obvious but I just don't know what else it would be.

    Cracked trailer fender

Metal fender. Welded to the trailer frame. The only thing I can come up with is the tires are causing vibration since they are not balanced and the vibration is causing the metal to fatigue and crack.

    Cracked trailer fender

The curbside fender on my boat trailer has a stress crack. The only thing I can think would have caused this issue is a tire that is out of balance causing vibration that eventually caused the fender to crack. Typically trailer tires aren't balanced but I think I may have all four trailer...

1958 Evinrude 7-1/2 Fleetwin carburetor overhaul

I talked to the dealer and he told me to do exactly that - he said to just install the clip and it will be fine so that's what I am going to do. I am hoping to run the motor in the barrel this weekend to test it out.

Fabricating a new transom for a 14 foot Cadillac aluminum boat

The inner and outer wood has rotted away. There was a 3/4" piece of plywood on the inside of the aluminum and 1/2" on the outside based on the amount of exposed portion of the bolts. I am going to fab up new transom pieces using exterior grade plywood and I initially thought about coating it...

1958 Evinrude 7-1/2 Fleetwin carburetor overhaul

I looked into that but it looks like it would interfere with the points when they open up. I am going to call my dealer and see what he has to say about it.

1958 Evinrude 7-1/2 Fleetwin carburetor overhaul

Part no. 172522 genuine Envinrude/Johnson kit. When I called the dealer for the secondary ignition wire, he asked me if I had the points and I told him I did and he said to bring them in as there has been some issues where some batches of points needed to be modified so they could be adjusted...

1958 Evinrude 7-1/2 Fleetwin carburetor overhaul

I am talking about the movable portion of the points. I don't want to use the old half of the points because they're pitted. Attached is a picture showing the problem.

1958 Evinrude 7-1/2 Fleetwin carburetor overhaul

I ran in to a problem - the spring on the movable sectopn of the points is about 1/8" longer than the originals and will interfere with putting the clip on. I'm thinking I need to mark the spring length and trim off the excess or is there something else that should be done? I am able to push...
