1996 GM 5.7L Vortec Carb'ed and Thunderbolt IV Ignition Setup

I have an identical motor to you but had TB V with no knock sensor... The stock compression is 9.1:1 and run on 87 no problems... As dodge said, just keep up with the maintenance and you'll have no problems... If the motor detonated on 87 octane then they would have either changed the...

    Outdrive gasket pushing out

Also, I'd go with 316 Stainless locknuts like these... Just double check tho, I can't remember if they are coarse or fine thread off the top of my head.. but I know they are 7/16 thread. 316 Stainless Locknuts

    Outdrive gasket pushing out

The torque on the nuts isn't really gonna be any different whether or not the nylon is worn out so that sounds like bs to me... That being said, I would still replace them just for the fact that they can't vibrate loose and come off. For the gasket, I always throw a little bit of bellows...

1996 GM 5.7L Vortec Carb'ed and Thunderbolt IV Ignition Setup

Delco doesn't have a knock sensor... Its basically equivalent to a TB IV system, both electronic advance that is set by the internally programmed timing curve with no deviation... The big benefit of the Delco system is the replacement cost for components... I switched to the Delco system because...

Alpha 1 gen 2 Gimbal Rebuild

Just out of curiosity, are you making the assumption that the steering pin is worn out because the boat meanders back and forth at low speed or are you actually doing a "shakedown" test to confirm that the gimbal ring is loose? Not saying it isn't, but if you're assuming its worn because of the...

96 Bayliner 2050 - The Dirty Rotten Baystard

Looking for any good ideas from you guys out there with other boats or maybe that have had to deal with this before.... I've noticed in the last few trips out that everyone pretty much by default loves to stand on the EVA foam pad on the sun deck and basically drip all their river water on the...

Lower Shift Cable Adjustment - Am I doing it right?

Yes, shift cable adjustment can totally be done on land (just like in the video)... The main (maintenance) things that should be done in the water is checking reverse cutout switch as well as any idle speed adjustment type stuff because you need a load on the prop for those things to be set...

Mercruiser 5.7 shuts off when idling when warm

Nah, I've adjusted already when I put the carb on the motor after a rebuild before splashing my boat last year... I remember setting it at 1 1/4 turns out to start, but no clue if I went too far one way or the other screwing with the idle speed and idle mixture and whatever else lol... The only...

Mercruiser 5.7 shuts off when idling when warm

The plan was to take off the spark arrestor and watch it until it gets up to operating temp and make sure it fully opens... I don't think this is the problem because I think my issues would be under acceleration when the fuel demand is higher. My guesses at this point is its an idle mixture...

Mercruiser 5.7 shuts off when idling when warm

I'm pretty sure everything you mentioned should be good to go since I did a carb rebuild during my restoration and rechecked all my adjustments last season... That being said, I will definitely recheck everything... You did remind me of something though... I remember when setting the idle speed...

Mercruiser 5.7 shuts off when idling when warm

I have a 96 bayliner with a merc 5.7, 2bbl mercarb, and alpha 1 gen 2. It seems to start up and run great, but I've noticed the last few times out, that after cruising around for a while, when I stop and idle, the boat has a tendency to idle for like 20 or 30 seconds, and then will just die...

    Possible gimbal bearing noise

If the bearing is making noise, its already too late... The reason for the noise is theres already too much clearance around the bearing balls from excessive wear or the cage broke. Does the rumbling sounds happen no matter the drive trim/steering angle? If so, most likely a gimbal bearing...

    run a ground wire

running an extra ground wire really isn't needed if you make good ground connections to the frame... As mentioned above, make sure you use good quality crimp and heat shrink terminals and make sure the attachment point is good clean steel/aluminum/galvanized. Use stainless fasteners for the...
