Replaced Bellows now gears won't engage fully?

Try using a blunt punch that is just under the outer diameter of the cable jacket. Try to drive the remains of the cable forward and out. the wire in the cable jacket is almost impossible to drill out and just dulls the drill bit. If you manage to get the remains out then drilling the rest of...

    Best home generator?

Here in S Louisiana whole home generators are pretty common. When the power is out for maybe a week or more they are worth it. I went all in with a Cummins/Onan 25k. Within 300’ of my house there are 6 whole house generators. The problem at some houses there were some exhaust gas...

First time pulling an engine questions

The bellows has at least another year left so it is still good.

First time pulling an engine questions

The outer leading edge of the bearing retainer compresses against the bellows. The bellows is easy to change if you want to by just removing the worm clamp, with a screwdriver pry the rear inner lips inwards, raise up the pivot housing then tie it so it will stay up and remove the bellows.

    5.7 Mercruiser Starter problem

It appears that the starter is kicking out in a “false start” mode. I wonder if the same thing will occur with the coil wire out of the distributor cap. If it continues to turn over then then I think it would rule out a mechanical issue. Also with a remote starter button that you may already...

1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

OMC was the first with the dipstick/oil withdraw tube. If the core plugs are plain steel then your assumption is probably right about the engine was in a salvage yard in the past. Nice job on the engine hoist.

Everything done but low rpm at WOT. Distributor spring?

There might be a small wire spring retainer inside the top of the rotor shaft that has to be expanded slightly to lift the reluctor. Also there is a shift override switch that by passes the shift assist module. After the drive is in forward disconnect the module and try to get the boat on plane.

Everything done but low rpm at WOT. Distributor spring?

If you cannot locate the correct springs you can get a complete distributor from Sierra Marine. The carburetor is the original marine Holley ? Is the electronic shift assist system still in place and connected to the distributor? 18-5481Flame Thrower 18-5482 Flame Thrower Both are for 351-460

First time pulling an engine questions

Your description about the rear mounts is correct along with the front. It is the opposite of the #2 posting describing the Mercruiser set up. The 2 1/2” 13 nuts come off and of course the lag screws on the front mounts. Disconnect the fuel, battery cables, power steering, wire harness plug...

5.0 GXI Cracked Block Need Help Sourcing New Parts

Since this is a quick fix just replace the core plugs but you probably need a set of manifolds. Do not worry about replacing the head gaskets. Pay attention to the flywheel and starter mounting so that every thing matches up. The cam swap is up to you and requires dropping the pan and timing...

    1989 Mercruiser 4.3 LX, Alpha 1 Gen 1 Overheating

Low speed or idling heating is sometimes caused by a blockage in the by pass hole in the thermostat housing. Are the manifolds completely free flowing? Have you looked closely at the plastic cover in the bottom of the upper housing, it should show no appearance of melting. With the boat in the...

1987 Mercruiser 454 Loud 'Popping Noise'

Does your engine have the original ignition system? Has there been any carburetor work done recently? With an ohm meter check the resistance of the coil and spark plug wires. Any idea how long the spark plugs have been in service? Be sure that all electrical connections at the ignition...

    Aruba for our 30th anniversary

A few years ago the wife and I took a cruise from New Orleans to the ABC islands. All were very interesting. Aruba, Bonaire & Courasal. Not like other Caribbean islands where the locals are constantly in your face trying to hustle you for $.

    volvo penta water pump

Genuine marine circulating pumps have cast iron impellers and stainless steel backing plates some even have bronze impellers. Automotive style have stamped steel impellers with plain steel rear covers. If your engine is fresh water cooled with coolant then the automotive would hold up. If...

Mercruiser Oil Pan Replacement and Protection

When your engine was new and paint was applied the 3 spokes of the balancer blocked any paint. I bet your cover is so thin in spots that if you pushed an ice pick against it would go right through. While the cover can be changed with the oil pan installed it is a PITA.

Mercruiser Oil Pan Replacement and Protection

I used to spray the timing cover with the balancer off and the pan with 3M underbody spray. I even did this on new Re power engines. This was before I had access to bed liner coating which should work also. When changing the pan it is a good time to replace the timing cover.

Turn the boat, kill the engine.

The best way to repair any connections is with either soldering with shrink wrap or using crimp terminals with shrink wrap. Even home depot has a pretty good selection. An electronics specialty shop would have the best of if there is one near. NAPA and the usual auto stores are another...
