Volvo penta 225d over heating problems

The pump is on the front of the crankshaft. Most times the pump is not the problem but it must be checked first. It is held on with 3 bolts on the crankshaft pulley. Post a side profile of the drive unit as there are 2 other places that can cause an overheat condition.

    Closed water cooling 5.0L Mercruiser

Mercruiser recommends when a belt driven pump is used with fresh water cooling to connect the incoming water from the drive to the raw water through hull intake in a “Y” connection. This way the engine can be ran with the ear muff on the drive. I did the exact same thing on the Donzi I had.

I have a 1989 mercruser tops out at 3000 rpm

It appears that you have fuel injection. There is a switch on the shift linkage that prevents the engine from high RPM if the drive is not fully engaged. This switch needs to be checked.

    Fuel issues

It could be the fine mesh filter that is in the suction tube in the tank. These things really can cause a problem. You will have to remove the fuel hose fitting that screws into the tank. The tube is screwed into the 90* elbow then you push the filter out and pitch it.

First time pulling an engine questions

The timing cover is the least painted part of these engines. Before installing the harmonic balancer, put some sealer in the key slot of the balancer. Looks like you are close to the end, you will be fishing before you know it. My cousin has a 2820 Sport Cabin Parker with 2 Yamahas. This is his...

I have a 1989 mercruser tops out at 3000 rpm

Make sure that the choke linkage secondary “lock out” on the carburetor is allowing the secondary air valve to open. With the flame arrestor removed hold the choke butterfly open and try to push open the air valve. Which carburetor do you have, Rodchester or Weber/Edelbrock?

Alpha One Gen 2 - Trim will only go a few inches down

If there is enough fluid in the pump, then ram packing has tightened it self around the extended rods. First try spraying some penetrant on them then have someone put their body weight on the drive while you press the down switch. If you can get them moving they may free up completely. If you...

1989 5.7 omc propeller not spinning

In the meantime try to remove the swim step which will be a big help for when you start replacing the cable and re installing the drive. You will also need a 1/2” Allen wrench to unscrew the pivot housing bolts. Add a new drive shaft bellows to your parts to replace also.

1989 5.7 omc propeller not spinning

First get a genuine OMC service manual for the model number that you posted. Disconnect the lower shift cable and try pulling and pushing to see if the drive can be shifted. Sometimes the propeller shop did not press the hub all the way in. Is the thrust washer on backwards? When was the last...

First time pulling an engine questions

With the flywheel housing on a drill press you should be able to drill out the broken bolts. The engine mount “feet” might be saved after sand blasting, you probably have a torch to heat up the nuts to free them up. The threaded part can be replaced with generic ones. Also a good time to find...

Is this a trim ram issue? Popping and grinding noises from stern drive. pics and video attached!

With the rams off the drive have you tried running them in with the pump? If you still hear the noise then the packing glands on the rams need to be replaced. It is a easy job and the parts are not expensive.

1987 Volvo penta aq125a starting problems

You need to find out if it is running out of gas or is the ignition spark going away. One thing that helps the Bayliner/Volvo start. Is to add a wire from the extra male spade on the starter solenoid to the + side of the coil. That way there is 12 volts delivered to the coil in cranking mode.

First time pulling an engine questions

Sometimes trying to weld up spots on a rusted pan will leak because the metal tends to crack when cooling. The 2 part epoxy will be easier and will seal up the rust spots. Another way is flowing solder over the bad spots after cleaning with muratic acid. If you are referring to the sealing...

Replaced Bellows now gears won't engage fully?

Use a piece of 1/4”npt pipe as a gauge to select the right size drill bit so that you do not take out too much. A hog nose punch will catch and drive out the remainder of the brass fitting. Even if the threads get banged up some just run a 1/4” npt pipe tap into the hole. It does not take...
