    1988 350 Stumble Problem

To really check the centrifugal advance is to remove the breaker plate and inspect the springs and weights for free movement. Sometime where the distributor is located water drips down and will rust the insides of the distributor. Of course checking the movement with a timing light needs to...

There was an engine rear main change where the diameter of the flywheel got larger. These engine have a staggered bolt pattern. All engines before that had a straight pattern. Hopefully someone on this site can use your serial # to get you the right starter. Permanet magnet gear reduction.

    1988 350 Stumble Problem

If you can pass a stiff wire down and out the suction tube that will rule out any mesh filter, believe me I was once fooled by one and after using a 6 gallon outboard tank the engine went to 5k and held. We then switched back and the problem came back. You need to locate the numbers that are...

    1988 350 Stumble Problem

The Qjet that is rebuilt, is it the original carburetor? I hope so. When you punch it to get 4k rpm on plane does it hold or does it feel like it is surging and slowing? If so, if you gradually pull back the throttle from full does it momentarily surge ahead? When did this problem begin? When...

Missing transom bolt on Mercruser outdrive to bellhousing.

If you are very lucky and the transom is still solid the bolts can be replaced. This depends on how flexible you are, what engine, the boat‘s design. Punch out the remains tith a slender punch, clear the hole with a 1/2” drill bit. Depending on what model you have you will need an anode bolt kit...

HELP I can't get my motor realigned

Remove the top nuts on the mounts, with the engine hoist connected to the very front of the engine raise it then back the lower nuts down. Now raise and lower the engine to get the alignment bar into the sweet spot. Slapping the bar around is also a good way to get it in place.

Everything done but low rpm at WOT. Distributor spring?

The 454 BBC that was in my 21‘ Taylor SC jet boat had a 750 Marine Edelbrock with the “A” cut stock impeller would hit 5k @60 with no problem from a standstill with no bogging. It was a bone stock 330 hp Indmar conversion.

    Mercruiser Shifting Issues

Since the shift slider travels to the rear for reverse in the housing sometimes salt residue or corrosion will build up inside the cavity. After you remove the drive be sure that the cavity is clean.

    Overheating at idle

Look inside the thermostat housing, there is a metered orifice which is the “by pass” when the thermostat is closed. If it is corroded shut the engine will overheat.

Everything done but low rpm at WOT. Distributor spring?

An Edelbrock Marine 750 from Summit or Jegs should do the job. Summit’s #. EDL1410. @ $575.95. Have you checked inside the exhaust system for any blockage such as any exhaust shutters or even a rag could cause this kind of problem. Will the engine free rev in neutral? If so then that would rule...

    Dean's List gets another motor

Too bad you could not get a 3/4“or 1” impact with enough air to power it. I replaced one on a smaller boat at my shop one time and it had me “blessing “ it! And I had compressed air an impact wrench and a torch.

    Slave solenoid does nothing

With a test light probe the #10 y/r on the slave solenoid while someone turns the key to start. Sometimes the slave solenoid will click but does not make an internal connection. If it lights then test the same same colored wire on the main starter solenoid. If it still lights then either the...

    MC-1 Cylinder Rebuild Questions

When you remove the lock nut be very careful as there are small springs on either end and the check valves are in 2 pieces, be sure they go back on the way they come off. After the valves are off remove the rest of the parts from the rod. Screw the cover nut on the ram tube and bang it on the...

High compression in 1 cylinder - 7.4 carb

You may have a camshaft issue. As Flashback suggested remove the valve covers and watch the rocker arms on #8 compared to the other rockers. It might be a pulled rocker arm stud. Sometimes the press fit in the head is not tight enough. It is easy to drill and pin the stud in place.

    1972 Glastron v164 trim gauge

Glastron boats were used in “Live And Let Die” stunts that were filmed here in Louisiana. The Jet boat scene where Rodger Moore crashed the wedding scene was the second one. The day before he hit a tree and knocked out his 2 front teeth on the steering wheel, so a set of teeth had to be made...

Swapping gearing in a stringer outboard

Try to separate them inside the boat. They must not be repaired where they will get wet. Galvanic action will burn them out very quick.

Swapping gearing in a stringer outboard

Swapping the upper will work. Just be sure that the steering gears are set so that you get full swing in both directions.

2005 350 Mag dropping fuel pressure under load

I believe that is one of the Guardian modes. I might be wrong but it is worth a try. There also are kits that put the water intake on the transom so you do not have to go through the bottom. And yes you want both water supplies merged before the pump. I once had a Donizi with the 555 system...

    93 vp aq570 with 280 drive hydrolocked??

The worst one I have seen is a piece as large as my hand blown completely out in that area. Then one that was a pinhole that was squirting water into the distributor housing causing the engine to miss and pop back through the carburetor. One thing about water, it cannot be stopped frozen or...
