    MerCruiser update

I'm curious why for many years Mercury didn't require AF for winterization, but then it suddenly became mandatory. I don't think a lack of corrosion in MN is applicable to motors run in salt. I'm also skeptical of the claim that most corrosion happens during layup rather than during the season...

    Need to vent....

So got a call back yesterday. "We were able to recreate the problem" "So it wasn't water?" 🙄 They're telling me that VWoA won't approve the recall work because the symptoms don't go along with the recall (posted below). Not sure how it could possibly be any more consistent. They say VW thinks...

    Need to vent....

TL;DR: Car dealerships suck, and this is why I do my own work Background: Wife's 2017 VW Golf sportwagen starts stumbling. She pulls into the garage and notices gas pouring from the rear of the car. Takes a video. I come home, yup, gas. Car is idling, then stalls and takes a bit to restart, and...

Lanyard to disable engine when operator leaves the helm

Last I saw this was only if your boat came equipped with it. No requirement to retrofit. I don't know if Maine has enacted more stringent rules...

Had to send a FAX or "Back in the 20th Century."

I was talking more specifically about the third party free fax services. Your information ends up on their servers, who knows what they do with it. There are certainly ways to transmit information securely. Your information is much more likely to get leaked due to their carelessness

Mercury 6.2 ECT DTS Axius Voltage Issue

I used to have it. Sadly broke a couple of years ago. Easier and cheaper to buy a fancy one than to try to track down a bulb How are you accounting for the relay being powered when it shouldn't be?

Had to send a FAX or "Back in the 20th Century."

Hmm. Think my printer has a fax function. I also have a BT analog phone line -->BT adapter that can dial through my cell phone. I wonder if the printer could use that. But on the rare occasions that I need to fax, there are still a couple of free services online that will fax a scanned image...

WARNING !! WARNING !! About brand new sparkplugs I bought.

Just replaced the plugs on my 235k truck for the first time since I bought her in 2009. Gap easily more than 0.060 (upper limit of my gauge). Plugs might damn well have been original.

Mercury 6.2 ECT DTS Axius Voltage Issue

This is pretty much what I was thinking. Probably easier to pull fuses than pull wires. Didn't think of a diode (mine only has one buried in the alt I think); I wonder if there's one separating the different batteries somewhere. This really seems like a "too much power where it shouldn't be"...

Mercury 6.2 ECT DTS Axius Voltage Issue

My question was in the diacom, where is "battery volts" being measured at vs. "system voltage". I think the first thing I would do is measure the voltage at the relay when it's clicking--I bet you're getting that 9v there. If so, disconnect the wires from the battery switch. Something is...

Mercury 6.2 ECT DTS Axius Voltage Issue

    1. Didn't you have a similar issue when you bought the boat? 2. Where are battery voltage/system voltage measured? 3. Do you have a wiring schematic for your boat? At least a low level how the batteries are connected, battery switches, house batts, etc? 4. Did you measure voltages yourself at...

Mercury 6.2 ECT DTS Axius Voltage Issue

Make me an offer. Very low tech. Running well enough that I cleaned non-essential connections last weekend (radio, after guests argued that it was, in fact essential).

Anybody know about Ford DIS ignitions?

This is going to be a project for my 13 year old. He's convinced he can fix it by watching youtube (me: "how are you going to fix this when you can't adjust your bike gears?"). But he's saving his money for parts and gas. Inside actually looks pretty clean without water intrusion. Looks like a...

    Bravo 3 seacore - U joint replacement?

Those look terrible. Why wouldn't your mechanic change them originally? There's a list of compatible auto u-joints floating around somewhere, I imagine the B3 has an equivalent as well (@tpenfield ?). $20 or so each instead of the $150 or whatever that merc charges. In theory you can remove them...

    Tilt/Trim

So you 1. have voltage at one of the large posts on each solenoid (good wiring from battery) 2. none at the other with the switch depressed (= bad solenoid if you get 12v to the small post with switch depressed) 3. motor works when jumped directly (good motor) 4. motor doesn't work when voltage...

oh yeah, he also mentioned that it leaks a bit, but only while on the water.

    Quicksilver gimbal bearing dot alignment

That bulletin is confusing...Talks about the perma-lube bearing and then shows a greaseable bearing right below it. Maybe the greaseable needs to be placed at 10, and the directions for the other bearings are just there for consistency? FWIW, I installed a sierra sealed unit in 2020--I don't...

    Mercury 6.2L ECT Seacore Alternator Replacement . . .

I would have thought that mercury would have had a proprietary alternator by now. My mini (and your BMW) have rube goldberg'd the charging system into some computer controlled nightmare.

Anybody know about Ford DIS ignitions?

Just an update, finally got the new wires. I ohm'd out the other ones, and 1 wasn't in spec, but tried swapping them and it didn't work. Went to put on the new wires and noticed that at some point I mixed up 5 and 6...so there was at least part of my problem. Dunno if the original problem was...
