Question about an alpha 1 gen 2 outdrive

A little metal can go a long ways on attaching themselves to bearings and gear tooth faces. While you might get away with using it for a bit, eventually you will fail it and potentially take out the replacement upper.

    Mercruiser 4.3 carb weep

Tape probably won't help with a flare fitting. I'd inspect the tubing flared end for cracks before choosing a fix. Rick

    Conversion

Must have the very very last 5.7L ever to roll off the foundry line with a mechanical port on it. I'd stick with a mechanical given a choice.

Welding a gimbal housing yay or nay?

If was mine and I could get it clean, I'd weld it. But that is how I make a living. There is no significant structural load there except the bearing housing.

Mercruiser 140 front mount looks odd.

How is your alignment? That is the critical factor when messing with the mounts.

    Mercruiser bellows

Follow the manual. Inventing an 'easiest' way usually adds a little grief to the process.

1990 4.3 vortec new motor water in oil

First thing to do is pressure test the cooling system. Plug off the hoses going to the exhaust and the in-line from the transom. Should hold 15 pounds indefinitely.

    Best Oil Extractor

I used one of these air powered ones doing a job at a local diesel repair shop. Worked pretty nice to get oil out of a differential that needed welding. I gotta have one one day. https://www.northerntool.com/shop/tools/product_200623859_200623859 Rick

    Alpha1 Gen1 reassembly sequence

And I did the opposite, installing the transom assembly bare of rubber and bell housing. It just doesn't matter all that much as long as the gimbal ring and steering arm are installed to spec. I will freely admit that if you don't want to miss somethin, the manual is the way to go. RIck

    1990 Bayliner Capri 2050 5.0 V8 200hp

Just as an FYI - prop type and spec is determined by the boat manufacturer, not the power system manufacturer. Mercruiser will sell the complete power package with propeller and gearing per boat manufacturer's wishes.

    Mercruiser 3.0 - Block rust

Are you where you can run it on muffs for a bit? Let 'er get warm and see if you have a leak. That side is not the normal one to have any kind of freeze damage. So headgasket or just paint falling off.

Alpha 1 Gen 1 Mercruiser power steering

I think I can pull my motor in an hour. Reinstall in close the same amount of time. That sounds easier than a four f bomber day.

Cosmetic damage to outdrive or replace it?

The seal is in the bearing carrier, not the housing. That broken off piece could only be a problem should some weeds or other floating debris get caught up and wrapped up inside. I own a welding shop - I might be hesitant to weld that up if it would impair the carrier nut threads in the...
