    Updating throttle control

Pre-'79 cables came without ends. Post- '79 cables come complete, ready to snap-in '79-up controls.

    Updating throttle control

I thought you have to replace the cables with post- 1979 cables

    No fire

Not sure what year was the 50th anniversary, but the 1972-76 had a Lo- Tension Magneto. Flywheel magnets pass by the driver coil with both sets of points closed. A voltage/current is generated in the driver coil. One set of points open, and the voltage collapse creates a higher voltage which...

    1973 65hp starting question

Those 65hp motors are notorious (in my experience anyway) for water ingestion into the cylinders, destroying everything inside. My father-in-law went through three of them in short order.

The rectifier has absolutely nothing to do with producing spark.

    1973 65hp starting question

Nevertheless, with manual choke, it should not be necessary to squirt gas in from a bottle. How does this thing run otherwise? Have you actually run it on the lake? Hate to be a pessimist, but I suspect serious internal engine damage.

    1973 65hp starting question

Put away the squirt bottle.. Motor is supposed to have a manual choke knob on the front of the cowl pan. If memory serves correct, the knob has 3 positions, Choke, Automatic (electric), and Choke Off. Hm.m.m.m., wondering, do those Merc controls work otherwise????

    1973 40 HP Compression

In reply to your previous question,, pistons are tapered by design, meaning they have side to side movement. at the head end. But you have water damage, which is your major problem. EDIT: Just for kicks, I'll make a prediction. Missing or broken lower crankshaft seal has been letting water...

    1973 40 HP Compression

That rusty crank is all I needed to see. That powerhead has to come apart for further inspection (bearings). It might not be worth repairing.

    1963 Johnson 40hp, RK-25D

A 60-year-old motor likely has rotted electrical wiring. Not only that, but the electric cable going down to the lower unit is often burned/deteriorated. And of course, there is the shift switch in the remote control. An orderly troubleshooting is required.

    1973 25hp Johnson only reaching 5mhp

Speaking of assumptions, we always assume it is the motor. Never the boat. Got marine growth on the bottom? Carrying around 400 pounds of water under the floor?

Phooey. They will start and idle great on one cylinder.

Motor is running on one cylinder. Begin with a compression test to make sure something inside isn't broken. Then check ignition system. No, it ain't the carburetor.

Running horrible. 1978 Johnson seahorse 35.

I see you dinking around with the throttle plate with your fingers. "Idle" occurs with a closed throttle plate. Opening the throttle plate without advancing spark will make it run like that.

Why are you revving it in neutral anyway?
