    1970 Johnson 40hp 40e 70a spark plug

That was Bob"s Lake, near Maberly Ontario. Back then it was pristine. I hunted it up again a few years ago. Frankly, it was disgusting.

    1970 Johnson 40hp 40e 70a spark plug

The question bring back many old memories of 75 years ago when my dad would take us to Canada for walleye fishing. I remember we had to troll dead slow to get that orange and black flatfish plug down on the bottom. In my opinion, that 40 hp just isn't going to get it. They will idle slow, but...

    Evinrude 25 Electric Conversion

I'd like to help here, but I'm too darned sick. But it would help us all to know what the OP's goal is. Just adding a starter motor with a push button start on the cowl, of a remotely operated one with start and choke switches up front as the Johnson is?

    Evinrude 25 Electric Conversion

Well I'll be darned, Time to eat some crow here. The '77 was indeed the 32 cu block. Knowing that, the starter just might work on it. The main difference I see is the Johnson is what they called a "Remote Electric". Carburetors are different in that the electric start model has an electric...

    Evinrude 25 Electric Conversion

Fact is, those two motors are very different. You are contemplating taking parts from one motor and putting them on a different motor. Ain't going to happen. You might be able to cobble something up but that is what you will get. Sorry.

Tilt of my outboard not locking

The lock/release lever is for locking the motor down so it doesn't come up in reverse. There is no locking devise to hold it up. But there is a friction adjust to help. Tighten the nut on the tilt hinge bolt to your satisfaction.

    Intermittent Start - Starflite 75

Speaking of carbs, that hot water automatic choke never won many prizes in my opinion. Use the manual choke-on, choke-off feature at least till you get everything set up correctly..

    Intermittent Start - Starflite 75

Belt timing was my first thought. But certainly not my only thought. On that note, carb would be very low on the list unless you are flooding the daylights out of it.

    Required HP for slalom skiing

My, how things have changed. 21' boat, ~300-400 hp, on a narrow river? Enjoy it while you can. They will be posting that river as a No-Wake Zone sooner or later just as they have around here. The rivers were being destroyed by such activities. Now back in "My Day" we got along just fine and...

    Evinrude 4 HP deluxe

So I take it the shallow water drive isn't enough tilt for trailering? There always is the old-time tilt / trailering method. Tilt it up and stick a piece of broom handle under it. ;)

    Air intake 1975 20 hp

There is a foam seal between the lower cowl and exhaust housing. That probably is open cell foam allowing air to pass through. (??)

    Air intake 1975 20 hp

Yep, I have often wondered the same thing. Just rest assured that it does get plenty of air, and there is no problem. They made many thousands of those and similar models.

    1975 25hp Evinrude

Probably running on one cylinder. Fuel going through the nonrunning cylinder and draining out of the exhaust where it has been emulsified with water and turned black by carbon.

    Evinrude Mariner 6 HP 1965 Model 6502, 6503 3 fin prop

Why all the confusion? That is an aftermarket prop on a 1965 gearcase.

    Popping and revving?

The motor had a classic symptom of not getting enough gas to maintain proper fuel to air ratio, Causes can be varied, from running the tank dry to unplugging the fuel hose to sucking air from a leak in the hose, to yes carb sync, etc, etc. And of course, the fuel pump.
