    Outdrive leaking oil

As Scott said, one of those - should pull drive once a year and inspect and service everything, so this gives you a chance to catch up.

Burned valve or worse 1997 5.7 LX

I have no idea if there is a holeless gasket out there in the wild somewhere. I'd consider making the block off plate.

Burned valve or worse 1997 5.7 LX

No need for any hole there at all. With burned paint you probably should pull the motor and repaint :D

    Merccruiser taking on water.

It would not be the exhaust bellow. If you take a rag and soak up some of the oil floating in the bilge, if it smells like gear oil then you have a leak at the u-joint bellows and a drive lube leak at the yoke. No other lubricant smells like gear oil, so that's a dead giveaway.

BTW, when I run your numbers I get 6% slip, which is as good as it can get.

    Engine is in, successful run?

It will go down several hundred RPMs. Play around with the Mercruiser Prop Slip Calculator and you can get an idea of where to take things.

    Engine is in, successful run?

Good cam for that. I would run it at 5000 if the prop allows good hole shot. Might have to vent the prop for low end lugging prevention. Should be doable. Be careful adding timing advance. A little pinging on a motor that runs under 100% load will eat pistons.

    Carb float level adjustment help

Why did it overheat? How did you rev it up? Not under a load? Not hooked to muffs with water? Why would you think that the thermostat is the issue? Air in the fuel line would blast through the needle valve and not matter a bit. All in all sounds like the carb rebuild needs redoing and the...

    Carb float level adjustment help

A little backfire is an indicator of running lean. That's a good way to burn holes in pistons.

    ANOTHER WATER IN OIL QUESTION

When magnafluxing heads have to look inside ports above the valves. That's where the heat is and where the thinnest section of the water jacket is. A couple of forum users talk about how easy it is to rust right through that area on a salt water boat.
