Shoestring Starcraft SS160 Resto-mod - let the long slow road begin

Made some real progress this weekend and a potential setback depending on how I address a few things. First, got it back on the trailer and squeezed back in the garage. I’ll deal with trailer upgrades this summer while the boat is in the water. Then I started with the floatation foam and got...

    1987 Starcraft Islander 220V Rebuild

Sad to see the destruction of a hard to find Islander but excited to see your build. I like 22’ bow riders or tricked out mariners too. Edit: looks like this project is well underway. Don’t know how I missed it Looking great!

I’ve always liked that green with white seats and top. I vote Holiday also. Got any interior pics?

Shoestring Starcraft SS160 Resto-mod - let the long slow road begin

Thanks. I only paid at the bottom at this time. I didn’t want to get into extending the painting process at all. I figured that if I still have time left before the spring opener I’ll paint the top side while it’s on the trailer. If not I’ll leave it for next winter. The lake opens may 1st and I...

Shoestring Starcraft SS160 Resto-mod - let the long slow road begin

milestone achieved. 4 coats of white epoxy and I think it’s good to cure for 3-4 days. It’s going back on the trailer on Friday. I hope that’s long enough to cure good and hard. It’s in a 60 deg F shop, so it should be pretty decent by then. This epoxy was very thin, and some poor reviews...

    Help with a drainage problem

It’s not a great design is it?. Add a few rebuilds and you know there’s rivet tails in there adding to the trouble. Without fully removing the ribs, adding a drainage channel in each, I doubt there’s anything that really make them better.

Where do I belong? Alum Goods 1687, SS16 Clone?

No worries, I’ve had my run in with online orders too. Many, many weeks of delays on this project due to holdups.

Where do I belong? Alum Goods 1687, SS16 Clone?

Looks nice and clean! Are the flanges wide enough to cover the rivet heads? Did you use the wide flange rivets?

Shoestring Starcraft SS160 Resto-mod - let the long slow road begin

well I’m impressed with the 3M sanding block I picked up. I got a 60 grit one (assuming 60 is grit) and it did so much better than 80 grit sandpaper did. High stock removal and minimal burn through. The liberal g flex made sanding around rivets a breeze. Virtually no paint clogging. I will...

Shoestring Starcraft SS160 Resto-mod - let the long slow road begin

Hmmm. 3 coats of primer and a test sand tonight and I feel that the primer is now way smoother. It’s levelled off the highs or raised orange peel. I only did primer with rollers. I did not roll and tip and I wonder if that was a mistake as it appears that I’m just sanding off much of the primer...

Shoestring Starcraft SS160 Resto-mod - let the long slow road begin

Mostly except for the handful above the waterline on the bow. The Interlux tech rep said to sand The aluminum with at least 80 grit and prime with the 2000E Primer. No acid wash needed. He said if I wanted to clean it denatured alcohol was about all it needed. I asked and I double checked. Same...

    G/Flex question on aluminum boats

Thanks for your thoughts. I’ve gone and forged to head with this. While the boat was upside down I decided to G flex all the rivets and seems on the outside. I have already done Gluvit on the inside. I’ve also done a water test by partially filling the boat with water and I hope I’ve got...

Yes very much like this. Though maintaining a deeper splashwell in between. (Deeper in height)

Anyone experienced with applying Interlux VC Performance Epoxy by brusher roller?

Thanks yes I downloaded the same spec sheets. I suspect you are right. I found that a foam brush worked well with the 2000 E primer, wondering if the performance epoxy will be approximately the same consistency. I’ve also just learned of a technique that is supposed to be very common called...

Shoestring Starcraft SS160 Resto-mod - let the long slow road begin

Second coat today and did some touch ups with some foam brushes. I think I found the way to do a smooth application with this stuff. Will likely use more paint but a nicer laid coat

Anyone experienced with applying Interlux VC Performance Epoxy by brusher roller?

I’m considering interlux VC performance epoxy for the bottom of my boat. I understand that this is a very hard coding. I’ve read some reviews and several people say not to apply by roller/brush. However spraying is not an option for me at this time as it is winter and I am working in a one and a...

Shoestring Starcraft SS160 Resto-mod - let the long slow road begin

Moving forward a bit. Final sand and 1st round interlux 2000E primer. Not sure if 1 quart will get me 3 coats but I’ll know tomorrow. I sure hope the interlux VC performance rolls on a lot smoother than this primer. The primer dries so fast, it doesn’t settle out well. I’m going to see if...

    1980 Holiday 181

Looks good! Can you sit fully upright with this top or do you have to be scrunched down? I don’t have a top but I feel like I have to look above or below the top windshield bar to drive and I just have sleeper seats. (My seats are new, maybe they sit taller than the originals)
