Shoestring Starcraft SS160 Resto-mod - let the long slow road begin

Well here we go again. Time to dust off this stalled project once again. New motivation this time. Aside for a bit of flooring and remodelling inside the house, I have to get this boat ready for the end of may. (The season opening of the park we’re in) I recently replaced a pile of rivets and...

Preparing aluminum for 3M5200 and Gluvit?

Thanks, I power wheeled all the ribs with a bristle disk to clean off any oxides and power washed again. I hope it really creeps as the slow leaks we marked are coming from under the ribs.

Preparing aluminum for 3M5200 and Gluvit?

I had some minor leaks after replacing a pile of rivets. Before I put the floor in. I need to redo the the caulking at the bow (using 3m5200) and apply Gluvit to the ribs and perimeter rivets at the chine. I’ve pressure washed it and now I’m ready to apply the goodies. Is there anything else I...

    '97 Fishmaster 170 seam sealing

Brush it over the rivet heads also. Maybe several coats? Like I said I’m not used it yet. It looks kind of runny.

    '97 Fishmaster 170 seam sealing

I just looked at my boat. I’m not quite sure what I’m looking at in your photos. This this where the bottom of the hull meets the side? is the gap I am seeing above the rivet line? If so why would gluvit not settle down into that gap? Or is the photo upside down is the interior of your boat gutted?

    Did Starcraft ever?

I’m getting the flintstones meets jetsons vibe

    '97 Fishmaster 170 seam sealing

I’m no pro and about to seal up my Supersport myself. Is that a delamination of the joint due to rivet replacement or repair? I’d be inclined to flow some Gluvit into it first, followed by a light smear of 5200 to fill the gaps. Let’s see if some of the pros weigh in with other ideas

New to me boat. What year/model

That looks like a custom fabricated windshield. I’ve never seen the steering wheel close to the centre before. That’s odd

Just how much bigger is a 22 foot super sport versus a 16 foot?

Thanks, this is great info. I’ve located a 22’ classic super but the pricing is still covid-high. I might have to wait until the post covid price crash

Just how much bigger is a 22 foot super sport versus a 16 foot?

I thought the draft might be reasonable still. But whAt about the gunnel height? Are the 22’s much higher in freeboard? (Not sure if that’s the right term)

Just how much bigger is a 22 foot super sport versus a 16 foot?

OK yes I can do the math. I realize they are 6 feet longer, but how about the draft, beam and gunnel height? Would a 22 footer be too big for small lakes? Would they be that much better on bigger rougher water? I have a 16 foot super sport. The gunnels come to my lower thigh which doesn’t give...

1986 60 hp Johnson vapour lock?

Not guessing. Motor is 30 mins away. Dropping my spark tester off for my brother to try. Yes, pushing key continually. No fire with or without. I wasn’t sold on it being electrical due to low starting rpm and lack of flooding. So starting solenoid sounds very logical and will get looked at...

1986 60 hp Johnson vapour lock?

Thanks guys, will check it out. But One thing that bothers me about this though is that if it was a spark issue, would the motor not flood out terribly? There was none of that. No fuel smell, wet plug or gas slick in the lake. No heavy smoke or rough running when it did fire up. it’s as if fuel...

1986 60 hp Johnson vapour lock?

OK cool so when we pull the plug it’s spins faster causing the spark to light up?

1986 60 hp Johnson vapour lock?

I recently freshened up a 60 hp Evinrude for my brother. Three cylinder 1986 model. A few times lately it has refused to start. In both cases it took removing the spark plug to check for spark while cranking that actually caused the motor to fire. In both cases the motor would not fire cough or...

Solar panels to charge or to run a Noco dual bank charger?

Thanks for the idea on charging with the motor though I’m not sure how fast a 50hp evinrude triple (1995) will charge a deep cycle battery. This water body isn’t very large so I don’t anticipate running the motor much. Maybe it’s time to update my kicker to a 4 stroke kicker with charging...

Solar panels to charge or to run a Noco dual bank charger?

Thanks everyone, sounds like pulling batteries out to charge is my only real choice. Group 27’s and 50 step stairs....fun!!! I’ll get in shape that’s for sure. I can see adding a panel to top up my house battery as I will have an auto bilge. Maybe I should have bought lithium...

Solar panels to charge or to run a Noco dual bank charger?

I might have an opportunity to keep my boat in a slip next year. I’m not sure if I will get a slip with shore power, so wondering if I could charge one or two group 27’s with a solar panel installed over the splashwell. (16’ Starcraft supersport) If so, would I charge directly as opposed to...

Rivet alternative - aluminum hull repair

I have about 7 rivets that I can’t replace with rivets due to a big dent in a rib area. I decided to use stainless machine screws and nylon lock nuts and a gob of marine Tex around the screw head (bottom of hull) and Gluvit on the inside. I’m not fond of the idea, but it’s all I can come up...

1978 starcraft 16 ft just had her repowered with a 2020 60 hp Mercury 4 stroke. Can't wait to see what she'll do now

In Canada it gets you a 70-90 zuki or Yammy with controls because of the exchange rate
