    Pontoon Motor Selection questions

Have to agree with Sea Rider. "Good" is subjective, and likely what you're going to hear from the dealer. "Oh they work "GOOD" with that prop! NOT!! Allowing the motor to turn "full rated rpm" is pretty specific, allowing the dealer little room to BS. My 24' w/Honda 90 makes me happy with a...

    Pontoon Motor Selection questions

Congrats on the new boat! Hope it all works out well for you. Note that dealers very often don't want to spend the money to put the correct prop on the motor. You get all sorts of BS reasons. The bottom line/ my point is though, I would want a GUARANTEE that the engine will turn it's full...

    BF50A limp mode

No, have never seen a carbed engine with "limp mode" either. What I HAVE seen, is plenty of them with dirt related carb issues, overheating issues due to internal crud build up, bad thermostats, bad pumps, etc. No rocket science required to work on them....

    BF50A limp mode

You're going to need to provide more detail if I'm going to be of any help. If it's not running "correctly" what's it doing?

Upgrading from 2 stroke to 4 stroke

Another vote for getting the 70hp motor set up properly to pull a tube. I think a 90 hp 4 stroke is going to totally overwhelm a typical 16' fishing boat....

    Pontoon Motor Selection questions

A little biased perhaps, but if you have a dealer in the area, I would add Honda to your list of potential motors (I do a lot of work on them). My choice would be a 22' Bennington, and if you're serious about 8-12 people capacity, and there's any chance you might actually have that many people...

    Outboard Painting

Here, it's not about the expense so much as it is the time it takes to do a quality job. Maybe not "so many say" but this person has learned if you're going to do a quality job, you can't spray over poor prep work. Even an inexpensive gun needs to be cleaned too.... I work on Honda's for the...

    Outboard Painting

Thanks guys, but the suggestions are going a bit beyond the "touch up paint" concept. We'll just keep going with what we have. I thought maybe I had missed something.... What about hitting a touched up surface with clear urethane to fuel proof it?

    1970 Century Coronado Opinion

Just an opinion- If a 5000. dollar Coranado isn't sold yet, I'm betting there's something those pictures aren't telling us. Is the hull original, or has it been painted?

    Outboard Painting

I'd like to find a process that is gas proof, without spending a fortune in time and money. I've found the Dupli Color paint colors I need to allow touch up, but even if it's been applied carefully and dried for weeks or months, it will lift if you get any gas on it. Not a big deal for many I...

    lower unit's

There's a lot to it, like production years for instance, but it would be no surprise here if you found a 40 and a 50 that were interchangeable.

    Repower with modern 4 stroke?

My advice would be to look at the different weights for each HP, and focus on the largest HP motors for each weight category. Not Familiar with the motors in the size you might be looking at, but an example of what I'm talking about might be the Merc and Yammi 75-115 4 stroke engines are all...

    Motor swap

Working with a 20 year old boat, you can't assume this is just going to be a plug and play operation. If it has a wood transom, and it's never been replaced, I'd want to know, beyond ANY reasonable doubt, that it was up for your 90hp conversion. Or better yet, plan in installing new transom...

    Possible Business

You don't need much inventory, or insurance, to fix up an outboard you bought not running. Just patience, and a drive to make absolutely sure it's done right before you sell it. I test run motors up to 90hp on a sturdy home made engine stand on rollers. I run them in a cut down trash can. If...

    Possible Business

Buy a dead (non running) motor that you figure you can sell for 3-4 times your purchase price when all cleaned up and running right. Keep them small, maybe 50HP and less. Fix it with nobody asking you when it's going to be done, or asking for impossible estimates. Take you time and do it right...

Bimini replacement top; can't find same size as current one.

When comparing prices, custom vs. discount, you need to make sure you are comparing fabric quality. Custom is always going to be some of the best available. I doubt seriously your 11' canvas is a stretched 10'. Your existing frame (which does sound nice, I would re-use it as well) could...

    Pontoon boat weight help

I've seen the front lights on one of our older boats 2' underwater... That same boat carried it's 6 gallon tanks on racks located on top of the pontoons on either side of the motor. I woke up one morning and saw one of the tanks floating to one side of the boat, which was tied up at the dock...
