    Considering rebuilding 1990 Johnson 70hp - questions

I’ve considered that. But uncertain times. I’m considering a career change and don’t want payments or interest. I prefer to buy with cash.

The novice build: 1968 Starcraft SuperSport V-16 "The Boat"

Maybe save some time and inspect it? if it’s solid why bother? Check for rot all along where the splashwell meets the ply. Check for rot or soft wood all along the bottom edge, around the drain tubes, around the motor bolts, especially lower. Use a scratch awl and push to see it it sinks in the...

    Emanuals??

Thanks. I don’t want to invest in that, or wait for shipping, customs, etc. I’ll do that with my 70 rebuild Already got my parts and I’ve dived in. youtube has an excellent lower unit service tutorial. It’s the ignition timing etc. This one is going on my Brother boat until he outfits up with...

The novice build: 1968 Starcraft SuperSport V-16 "The Boat"

I’d rip the floors up right to the back before you do any repairs. Check your knee brace. What does the transom look like?

    Emanuals??

I know the factory repair manuals are the shizizle for doing deep repairs/overhauls on these motors, but how are the emanuals for the basics? Ie lower unit seals, water pumps, ignition stuff, tune ups etc? I have an 86 J60xxxx that I’m not keeping. So I don’t want to invest in a specific manual...

    Considering rebuilding 1990 Johnson 70hp - questions

Thanks. But with decompression, weren’t they supposed to read 120psi? I’m at 80-82-86psi. Those numbers seem pretty low to me. I have a 1995 50 triple (same block?) at 110-115psi. I bought it running so I might throw it on and see how gutless it is. I’m intentionally leaving a cmc tilt on my...

The novice build: 1968 Starcraft SuperSport V-16 "The Boat"

Wow. Do you have any other deep corrosion elsewhere? Me, I’d do as I suggested before, and maybe a padding of 5200 inside and an even wider inner patch. I’ll let the hull pros weigh in. Not sure if an inner patch, riveted further afield would put more strain. I’d hate to see you get spider...

    Considering rebuilding 1990 Johnson 70hp - questions

Thank you for that advice. If everything looks good inside I will be rebuilding it. I’d like to have a bit of fun with it. (both with the rebuilding project and zipping around with a 70 instead of my 50) Ultimately though I will probably only run it for a year or two until I can scrape up a bit...

5/32 inch or 3/16 inch fuel line? 1986 60 hp Johnson

Excellent, thank you. This is what I was worried about. I will definitely buy some 5/32” line. I didn’t know they were specialty ties also

    Clean or rebuild?

Thanks. I have the impeller already, never thought about a thermostat

The novice build: 1968 Starcraft SuperSport V-16 "The Boat"

oh dear. I would be removing those patches and going a little larger with 5200 and solid rivets. Or at least drilling out and replacing the rivets that are there with 5/32 or 3/16 solids. I’d also replace the solids that have been ground down on the keel strip. If you happen to be in southern...

    Good compression tester’s?

I’m not seeming to have good luck with compression tester ‘s. I just replaced one last year and I’m wondering if it’s going again. I tested a few motors that I had last summer and I just recheck them to find lower numbers across the board, or at least what I recall. I just bought the equus...

5/32 inch or 3/16 inch fuel line? 1986 60 hp Johnson

I think the lines that run to the carburetters call for 5/32 inch? none of the auto supply houses around has the size. My local marine supplier is abysmal for anything. Could I get away with 3/16 inch fuel line? I’m afraid to make the assumption. I don’t want fuel leaks or vacuum leaks

    Clean or rebuild?

Wondering if I can just get away with a carb clean. I brought home a 60 hp Johnson, 1986. Hasn’t run in years. Good compression. Carbs were completely dry except for the bottom one which was full of oil. No gum or varnish that I can see. The only thing I know it was a really acrid smell. Just...

Dont know how to sell starcraft 1974

Key differences between glass and aluminum boats; glass boats are expensive and involved when it comes to repair compared to aluminum. It costs money to dispose old glass hulls. (Around here anyway) aluminum hulls are relatively easy to repair with common construction methods. They can be...

Shoestring Starcraft SS160 Resto-mod - let the long slow road begin

Bah! I wish I knew that before. That’s what I get for skimming through everything at breakneck speed. Ok, so I have clecos and rivets for life...I’m just going straight to plywood and hardboard. I should be glad, you saved me some work! Thanks for digging up the pics

Dont know how to sell starcraft 1974

In this area, the aluminum version would be more. If his boat was garage kept, good transom and good floors, it might be an easy sell. If it needs all that to be replaced, he might be hard pressed to have someone take it. That motor is or is close to vintage, so only a small handful of people...
