    Evinrude 28spl spark trouble

Make sure it didn't overheat -- need a test barrel deep enough for water about half way up the leg. Here's one of the open air spark testers available at most auto stores: Look for about half inch spark, or a little less, to test magneto output. Test with both plugs removed and a fully charged...

1995 Evinrude 60HP Bogging down on a 17 ft open fibreglass run about boat.

https://www.iboats.com/shop/engine-parts/1995-Evinrude-E60TLEOC-Carburetor-Parts.html Concentrate on number 14 orifice (high speed) -- run a soft wire through and use carb spray. Might as well test for spark before taking down carbs. Use a tester similar to this:

68 Johnson 55HP (TRL-10R) not starting, just barking.

Get one of these testers ($10-$15 at an auto parts store): Can only do one at a time, but test with all plugs removed. You may have to extend the ground (e.g., wire with a couple of alligator clips). I suggest starting with 5/16 or so and adjust back until you get the strongest spark.

1982 Evinerude 9.9hp loosing spark under load

Back out of the weeds a bit and get an open air adjustable spark tester like this one: You should measure about a half inch, strong spark if the ignition is good (both plugs removed for testing). If you see that, remove the flywheel and make sure the keyways line up (no sheared or partially...

1974 6hp Evinrude Fisherman WOT very very sluggish!

This for testing the magneto (about $10 at an auto parts store): Test with both plugs removed, and make sure the tester has a solid ground. Use Champion J6C plugs, gapped to .030. You might be due for replacement plugs — can’t tell from the pic, but if there is any rust you will need to...

1954 15hp, Evinrude unexpected throttle issue

Plug gap is .030. Points are .020, set when the rub arm is at the high point on the cam, then repeat with other side. Clean the points with some lacquer thinner or acetone. best to check for and measure spark with an adjustable tester (cheap):

    distributor question

I have a Mercruiser 305MIE inboard, reverse (clockwise) rotation. I can’t get clear whether I need a reverse rotation (CW) distributor or a standard (CCW) rotation. Reverse rotation distributors are more expensive so that’s an added incentive to ask. On various boating sites, I see statements...

1977 Evinrude 55hp coil test specs.

Probably 5 or 6K ohms from the plug boot to the ground wire (secondary side) -- but my reference is old style under flywheel coils. I would recommend measuring spark to test strength of the ignition system, just using a cheap adjustable tester. Start with about a half inch, and work back if you...

8hp Johnson carb tuning float adjust help needed

Progress, it seems. Try adjusting the needle slightly richer for starting (c.clockwise). Also, measure the spark to test ignition health -- should see about 7/16":

Another problem with 1975 Johnson 85 hp v-4

Put away the Bic lighter!! Fuel ratio is 50:1 (2 1/2 - 3 oz. per gallon -- 2.56). Possible you have water in the fuel. Use an adjustable spark tester, open air variety:

my Johnson 90 idling RPM? on hose and in water??

don't know if you are being literal referring to a bucket, but should use a something the size of a barrel -- plastic trash can works. Idle or fast idle only, hose running. Water well above water pump -- 6 inches or so. Half way up the leg is good.

    1988 40HP Evinrude won't go full power

Measure spark with an adjustable open air tester (looking for sharp 7/16"). Not sure what hull you have, but can be hidden weight under the floor (water and water logged foam). Tester similar to this:

    Spark problem

Need a sharp 7/16" spark, and the only way to confirm that is to measure:

    1963 Johnson RK-25 40 HP Electramatic won’t start

Measure the spark and post results. Issue is not likely the plug, it's the ignition output/strength:

need help! I've tried everything I can

could be a linkage issue, maybe a problem with the remote throttle cable. Sounds like you are trying to talk yourself in or out of something. Carb rebuilding at a shop is expensive. We're not in the boat with you. If you have some doubts, why not do some more testing -- maybe consider...

    Johnson 6hp issues Aggghh

Maximus — think you’ve got it. Suggest you do half the magneto at a time so you have the other half for reference. May want to replace coils, points, condensers and wires at the same time, but depends on how things look to you. BTW, you can check any new assembly (check for spark) by...

1995 9.9 Evinrude 4 stoke runs a bit then quits

Available at most auto parts stores, and quite cheap. Start with a half inch or a little less, and adjust backwards to look for spark. If no spark, would need to troubleshoot ignition system (check first and post results). If you have solid spark, you would pretty much rule out ignition issues...

Johnson 6hp won't throttle up all the way

Use a spark tester to check ignition condition. Set it for about 1/2 inch and work backwards until you find strong spark (around 3/8 inch minimum). If successful spark test, revisit carb work:

99 Johnson 30 hp running issues

Set your spark tester to about a half inch (7/16"), and get a good ground for the tester. Crank with all plugs removed. Measuring/testing ignition strength -- as opposed to plug condition or gap. I now keep an image of a tester handy:
