    Oil Leak?

Smell test. Gearcase oil smells like sulphur. Drain and refill the gearcase for storage (typically), and wrap the l.u. in a garbage bag to keep out pests. Store upright so the unburned fuel and any water can drain.

1978 85hp not getting full power

How are you checking spark? Should be measuring it with an open air tester -- close to 1/2 inch is "good", indicating ignition is doing its job.

    Rochester Quadrajet Rebuild and Adjustments

Thanks again. I would say steady near WOT. Carb was rebuilt last Spring (I didn't do it -- left it to the marina shop.) It's time to have the boat pulled anyway, so will get back to it next year. I have a feeling it's close. Great thread!

1995 johnson 15hp. J15retb. Cant get to start?!

My cue to jump in. Open air adjustable tester, about $10 or so at an auto parts store.

1957 Johnson 3 hp - No Fuel In Cylinders

3/8 inch open air. Set it for a half inch and work back if you need to in order to find spark. You may not be getting fuel from the tank (valve open?), or the fuel is contaminated (water?), but should have popped when you used starting fluid.

Another Super Seahorse 35 carb guru needed:

btw -- measure spark with a tester like this (3/8" OK -- I start at 1/2" and work backwards): Testing ignition strength.

Evinrude 70hp bogging down when throttled up

Sounds like you are testing gap by running the engine one one or two cylinders(?) Use a test like this, all plugs remove when cranking:

1988 Evinrude 48 SPL - Refuses to start

guess maybe I could do that. :)

    96 Johnson 112 V4 spl bogging down

one of these for measuring spark:

    1975 Johnson 15hp

Look for a 5/16" spark like Jimmbo suggests. Use this type of tester: You may have weak spark or perhaps intermittent spark, which usually indicates a problem with the ignition system. Measure the spark, and post results.

1987 evinrude 40 vro running issue

Travis -- For Jake's suggestion, use a tester like this: The object is to measure spark to test the strength of your ignition system. If you get some info on the temp issue, post that. Again, 160F or more is too hot, and means there is a blockage (silt or salt, depending on where you boat)...

Outboard running erratically when at an angle.

Pump the hand primer when the motor is acting up. If that cures the issue, it's likely a fuel pump problem. Do what your are comfortable with for spark testing, but in order to get a uniformly solid spark at the plug (at a much smaller gap under compression), the theory is to measure at a larger...

    1996 Johnson 130 hp V4 looper - No power

To measure spark (test strength of ignition system): If a permanent tank, draw some fuel from the bottom and check for contaminants. (Use a glass jar, and let it settle out -- water will settle at the bottom.) Also consider hull condition. Water logged foam under the floor, for example --...

    Fuel pump pressure

So you need some advice on a 35 Johnson, and I need some advice on adjusting secondaries on a Rochester quadrajet (1980 305 MIE 228). Maybe if we're all still around later this Spring, we can share tips. (Buy an open air adjustable spark tester at an auto parts store [$10 or so] -- not the...

68' Johnson 9.5 Outboard weird RPM issue.

Tester like this: The object is to verify/measure the strength of the magneto output.

    No fire

Need a tester. Measure spark like R. describes:
  17. oldboat1

    No fire

If magneto is assembled: Set meter on 1K ohms and measure resistance from the boot (spring connector in boot) to the mag plate. A reading of 4 or 5 tells you the secondary winding is good, and you have a connection from the boot through to ground. Test both leads. If the coils are cracked, just...

1992 Johnson 60HP @ WOT but cruising speed

Also think it's a spark/ignition problem. Use an open adjustable tester to see what the ignition output is: Make sure the motor is spinning fast enough for good output. Remove all plugs for testing, and be sure the battery is a good one, fully charged. Sandpaper the cable ends until shiny...

    1992 johnson fast strike 150

Whether the horn sounds or not, surface temp at the top of the heads should be around 120-140F. Over 160F is too hot (and too hot to touch). Bypass that valve, and measure spark on each lead:
  20. oldboat1

Johnson 88 spl very low compression all cylinders

This is a simple spark tester to use: The point is to measure ignition output. If the spark on your engine measures around 1/2 " and is sharp, your ignition is performing as it should. Remove all plugs and fully charge battery (or replace). The engine has to crank at around 300rpm to produce...
