I pickup one and it's a bit easier to use with one hand then the LnL, issue is I have some deep zerks. Looking further I then found they also make one which...

No I didn't say that, A Tach is a pulse counter. It counts the pulses from the coil

    Tachometer

Would need the manufacture of the gauge That said, a auto/marine Tach doesn't use a sender, they all use the signal coming from the coil (gray wire)

Using your serial numbers I see you can still get the ECM. You currently have a 555PCM and can get a 555PCM which does not use Axis at 2500 each https://www.mercruiserparts.com/bam/subassembly/31752/13884/45

    Houseboat Electrical Rebuild

That's not how a isolator works. An isolator is just high current diodes. Each standard diode has a 0.7V voltage drop across it. It does not distinguish between a good or bad battery, nor one that is full charged over half charged. The ACR does do such things and has no voltage drop

How bad of an idea is this for OB support while trailering?

I don't see a issue with your setup and understand your thoughts. Same thing goes along with never work on any hydraulics without blocking it. Hydraulics can and do fail without warning, many have died thinking otherwise
