1982 16 Foot Starcraft SS Transom Rebuild

Does anyone have (or seen) a reference that indicates that MDO is suitable for STRUCTURAL uses? I saw none with a quick check.

    1955

Ash turns black when exposed to water, very quickly. If you use it , be prepared to keep a good coat of varnish on it. A story - (I'm an old canoe guy, wood/canvas) back in the day Chestnut canoes used a lot of ash for rails and trim, the preferred wood is 1) spruce or 2) mahogany. I suspect...

What did I do wrong with Transom?

Spend some time over on the WoodenBoat site/BB. There are lots of arguments against using epoxy to "seal" wood from water.

My First StarCraft; 1975 18' SuperSport

Interesting, I wonder when (or if) they changed it, as I'm petty sure it wasn't legal years ago. Of course not many here "fish" for carp, lots of snagging in spring and bows later, and not much to return with this. As for the Hp, we have a Merc 85 (75 prop) on our SS16 and it's about...

My First StarCraft; 1975 18' SuperSport

CC, Where are you fishing? Here in MN it's illegal to put rough fish back in the water (including carp). I suspect most end up in gardens. And you should really consider WM's 140, that would make a fun boat out of it. Dan

3.4 likely hood of being cracked

I'm looking for a donor with a MC 3.4, how sensitive to freezing are they? The one in question is reportedly not winterized. We have had enough cold temps to freeze it. It is stored outside. Is it scrap?

    Possible engine swap - 4.3 for 470

I have a possible boat restore project and one of the pieces is a swap from the 470 to a 4.3. The boat/470 is a 1979, the 4.3 likely late 80's or early 90's. The question is (other than is it even worth it) - can the 470 gimble/out drive be used with the 4.3 or is there improvements to be had...

    Visiting here is bad

It causes folks to do insane things. Like bringing home projects when they are not needed. Thanks Watermann :) Dan

    Just picked up a 1983 15' Holiday

To my eyes, that is a mod'ed Holiday, take a look at the following images, close ups of the catalog pics posted above. Note 1, where the windshield is relative to the trim strip on the side, and 2, the width and distance of the bow cutout to the ft light. And the SS stern has a full width "cut...

Compare the SS/HL hull vs the larger Islander hull

For those who have owned/used both of these hulls, what are the differences between them. ie; handling, need more or less power, effort to pull/launch, ease of fishing out of, and type, trolling vs casting vs soaking. I've had the desire to upgrade to a 18 SS, but after seeing all these...

Anybody here get the 22' Holiday V5

that was on the Fargo c-list. Complete with a 350 Chev/260 Hp, needed a lower unit. Very temping but just too large for me. Dan

This is contagious - now I have to get another boat

I was checking out the latest adds on c-list and just had to buy this, after waiting a few weeks to let it ferment a bit. The old Merc inline 6's are just too cool. This being a 1985 version. An 18 SS is now needed.

How do you guys do it????

There are so many interesting SC's posted and they all could use some lov'un, how do you pick just one (or 2 or x) ?. And they all invariably have rotten wood, a better solution is obviously needed. Something non-wood that can handle getting wet without rotting. Dan it gets hard to look at...

A tale of Three Companies - or an obsession gone wild

I tend to spend too much time on the computer, often looking of new info. Some of this I had heard before, some is new. Note that Harold Schrock was controlling/running at least 1 of the 3 companies through most/many of the years of interest. Enjoy, Dan A tale of Three Companies 1903 Arthur...
