Advice needed on 12'-14' jon boat purchase.

Very true, the model I had was riveted but still a handfull. I had a flat bed trailer with a carpeted bed and could get it up in there, but too all I had. Would guess the weight to be around 80-90 lbs and yes...very awkward to go handle solo....

Back in my younger days, when the electric shift was popular, most issues were caused by lack of maintenence....similar to most boat motor issues !!

Advice needed on 12'-14' jon boat purchase.

They are scarce no matter where you live ! Once people have a nice Jon boat, they never get rid of it ! Wish I still had my River Jon boat ! Because folks use them in ponds and other private areas, they often fail to get required paperwork. My current small 12' Jon boat was laying under...

Deep Cycle Battery not good for starting??

I have a Decka a battery plant in my area, they have a following, but bang for the buck, I have had better service for the dollar from Walley World batteries in my 30 plus years of using them.

Might be dipping my toes back into boating

Better off looking for an aluminum hull, far less wood to rot and easier to repair if it is ! If being used in salt water, then that idea might not be good. For fresh water use...aluminum all the way !!

Advice needed on 12'-14' jon boat purchase.

Take a tape measure with you when you look. Length can vary by 6 inches, width is normally measured at the bottom, or it has been for most of my 60 years in aluminum boats. I am sure there are some exceptions with some oddball Myers jumping in from time to time. My old river Jon was 48" wide...

Advice needed on 12'-14' jon boat purchase.

At the price of new ones, I would look carefully at used ones. Bottom line is...go with the widest and deepest you can find !! Many years back I had what was called a "River Jon boat" ....extra wide and extra deep in a 12' model with a 10 ho rating. Awesome boat, very stabil. Owned riveted...

Deep Cycle Battery not good for starting??

If your motor starts quickly, the battery should recover quickly, it would take quite a bit of cranking to drop your battery low enough to not restart your motor. Back in my younger days, my motor did not have a charger to recharge the start battery, but I only needed to charge the battery a...

I forgot the name of a recommended E10 gas tank cleaner.

Gumout came out in the 60's, to keep gasoline from turning to varnish and clogging up carbs. Used to work for a local outboard repair shop in the early to mid 60's, most of our work was cleaning the varnish and crud out of the carbs of motors. Gumout was created to help stop or slow down that...

If your going to keep this motor, find a " factory" service manual, well with the cost to do things correctly ! Bypass the aftermarket manuals unless you use them for TP as that is all they are good for....

Deep Cycle Battery not good for starting??

According to most of the battery mfgrs, a deep cycle should not be used for starting purposes as they are not designed for the large amp draw needed for starting. Most out boards do not draw as much as a big V8 truck engine so it might not cause that big a problem. Deep cycle bats are used for...

Add some airbags under the back and you will be good to go as far as weight distribution goes, brakes are a must on most any trailer over 2500#.

Most E fuel issues start at the supplier...many do not maintain their tanks and equipment so you are buying poor fuel to start. We have a local co-op fuel supply that are very good at maintaining their fuel supplies and equipment. Been using their fuel as have numerous neighbors for a few...
