    Building a '93 Caravelle 1750 Classic Bowrider

Good point. I needed and excuse to buy a hand-held tach, anyway.

3,000 was wide open. I need to verify that the butterfly is actually wide open when the control is all the way forward.

    Building a '93 Caravelle 1750 Classic Bowrider

I finally got out for another test run and was blessed with fantastic weather. Getting it running right is the final step in this complete restoration. The '93 1750 ran the best ever, so far. 3.0L OMC. 19P x 14.5 aluminum, 3K rpm gave me 35 mph. I have a 17P I can try next, but mainly I was...

1981 Sportcraft 270 repair underway - transom, stringers, & repower

Good progress! I hope the weather holds out for you. I had one thought/concern about the drain where the stringer meets the transom. I understand the logic behind it, but wont that also allow water to get INTO the outer sections as well as out of them? Would it be better as an...

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

I made a terrible mistake by replacing my distributor module with an unbranded one. It caused me allot of headache. I hope you bought a top shelf part and kept the original as a spare to keep in the boat. When they quit, they are DONE. Edit: Looks like yours is just a pick up. Also, on the...

    '90 Maxum 2100SR - restoration & conversion

Similar here. Got mine all figured out, ready to test run, but it's been too hot to be enjoyable, so I've been working on other projects. Lucky for us, we don't have to winterize for a while yet.

    Caravelle boats wood free?

Correct. They were all wood-free by 2004.

1981 Sportcraft 270 repair underway - transom, stringers, & repower

He nailed it. No need for sealing it off or adding wax until you lay your final layers, which are usually gelcoat. "Laminating resin" (unwaxed resin) is designed to harden, but leave the surface tacky so that it will accept the next layer without sanding. I have found that even after several...

    73 Sea Ray restoration

Collapsed lifters often respond well to additives like Rislone. You draw out some oil and replace it with the additive of your choice and run it awhile. There are several such products.

Better stuck closed than stuck open. You accomplished quite a bit in this oppressive heat.

    Building a '93 Caravelle 1750 Classic Bowrider

I just set timing with the shunt tool and for the first time ever, it worked as it should. I plugged it in, set "base timing", removed the shunt and it seems right, now. Can't wait for the next test run! Stupid Chinese parts caused me allot of grief. I'll order a spare, but it will be OEM...

    Building a '93 Caravelle 1750 Classic Bowrider

I've been having trouble setting the ignition timing on this engine. During the test run in the rain, it would only get to 2,300 rpm even though it should do twice that. I guess you could say it was running half fast. Last weekend I ran a smaller prop, yet it still topped out at...

    2002 Mercruiser 3.0 Bayliner Capri 1750 speed/rpm

These engines are very common. However, remanufactured and new replacements are scarce at the moment. I've been looking. When I do come across a vendor who has one, the price is close to $4k for a reman. A year ago you could buy a new one for not much more than that.

    2002 Mercruiser 3.0 Bayliner Capri 1750 speed/rpm

Could be stuck rings, a valve that isn't closing all the way, or a burnt valve. a little Kroil or Marvel Mystery oil squirted into the cylinder and allowed to soak may free rings that are stuck with carbon. Swap a quart of oil for a quart of Rislone in the crankcase and run it for 20 or 30...

    Building a '93 Caravelle 1750 Classic Bowrider

As I worked through the project I kept discovering more things that were missing. This thing was little more than the two outer fiberglass shells, a trailer, and rebuilfable drive components. All in all, I think I faired pretty well on cost. I think I did well on time as well. I stuck...

    Building a '93 Caravelle 1750 Classic Bowrider

I recently added up my expenditures on this project. I counted materials that could only be used on this project, special tools that I doubt I will ever use on another boat, parts, and consumables. Consumables are items like brushes, solvents, gloves, tyvek suit, etc. I did not include parts...

    Building a '93 Caravelle 1750 Classic Bowrider

Third outing. Trailering, launch and retrieval were blunder-free this time. Took the whole family out today. It ran pretty well. We played for awhile before it quit. Just like the second trip, it wouldn't get above 2,300 rpm even with the 17P prop. Timing? Chinese module? Tried a...
