Bought a Used Boat, but what is it?

My mechanic says they are loosing money on 4 strokes after the warranty runs out. People don't want to spend the repair costs on the 4 strokes and they are to difficult to work on on there own. Their shop had to spend a quarter million on speciality tools to service the new engines. Home...

    Replacing Keel rollers

Depending on hull shape, sometimes the bunk being bowed adds more support. To ridged in spots could cause dents....can't tell about your situation so just offering some food for thought....

Bought a Used Boat, but what is it?

If you can afford to pay others my hat is off to you. When I had my I/O, I didn't have many surprises and most work could be handled by myself. Parts were a lot cheaper and easier acess over a large outboard. I have had to downsize due to health issues, so back to an older two stroke 40 hp...

    Solas Amita vs OEM (Yamaha)?

Might be a difference in bigger props for bigger motors. I wanted another prop for my 40 hp outboard, our local prop shop recomended michigan wheel and showed me some differences. Solas was OK but the blades were thicker and not as effiencent as the thinner blade MW props. Not sure how they...

    Prop damage threshold

Yep, bent blades can be just as bad as out of balance as the load on each blade changes so some serious load changes are not gonna be good !!!! At slow speed you can limp back to the dock, but prolonged running at speed will just put excess wear on the entire engine. So which is easier to...

Johnson 50hp swap to a Johnson 110hp Possible?

You didn' ask about a bolt on, you ask if you could swap them.....you could swap to any motor and drill new holes! Whenever you buy another motor, there are certain things that should be done before using it.

Can I use a jack plate for short shaft motor on tall transom

It could work if you have the room, motor would just be much closer to the water, if a tiller model, that could be an issue depending on shape of the transom.

    Solas Amita vs OEM (Yamaha)?

I have only tried that brand once, was not impressed but that does not make them bad. My best sucess has been with Michigan Wheel, not the cheapest but performance always good and when I need one repaired, my prop shop speaks highly of them. The key to having a prop match your boat is that the...

    Solas Amita vs OEM (Yamaha)?

Any time a prop is replaced, go for the best for your application. What is your max rpm at wot ? Does it match the motors max operating rpm? Even going slow, the prop should be effecient to get the best from your motor.

    Bellows Water Detector - Retrofit?

Sitting in the water ( moored) exposed to the sun, stored tilted up are all things that will shorten a bellows life. Mine was stored on a trailer tilted down ( no stress) in a barn out of the sun, in fresh water only, so I got the maximum life from my bellows. I also only used Merc products...

Merc 3.0 belt replacements can be challenging time-wise, but would you,

You remove the mount in your driveway and add another belt, just zip tie it off to the side. When you old belt breaks, just loosen the alternator and slip the new belt in place. Adjust and go. Most everyone I know with a 3.0 does this, even got that tip right hear on iboats.

    Parallel battery specs

I have jump started hundreds of times with no issues either, but...there are those that have had serious explosions !! I go overboard when connecting batteries to be sure everything is good and proper, never been one to cut corners, but, look around, how many folks take chances, and don't...
