    Maybe gimbal bearing?

You just read the first post in a thread with 14 pages, haha. Tip of the iceberg! As stated, I did drill, and the boat now has a brand new transom, stringers, and deck. I didn't mean to hijack the original poster's thread this bad - sorry about that. I'm nearly done with the structure...

    Maybe gimbal bearing?

Thanks for clarifying. My engine is out right now and wondering if there is any benefit to pulling the cover off the coupler housing to inspect, or if the flashlight method is good enough. Or, if I should just replace the coupler while I'm here. The boat is a 1987 and I believe everything is...

Mercruiser Alpha 1 Gen 1 -- Gimbal bearing

I haven't used it yet, but I bought my gimbal bearing removal / installation / alignment tools from MBS Manufacturing on Amazon, and they look like the ones Rick has pictured above.

    Maybe gimbal bearing?

Can you further explain your statement on this? What are you looking for by shining a flashlight on the coupler?

    Restoring a 1990 Larson

Looking good! That drive is minty fresh. Yeah...carpet...I'm glad I'm not gelcoating the whole boat on mine. :) Though I'm sure it's going to look sweet and be pretty easy to maintain!

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

More work on the kick panel. Got the foam template dialed in and hole cut for the glove box. Template transferred to 1/2" plywood and cut out: Plywood with a coat of resin on one side. To avoid having to buy another $55 sheet of plywood, I opted to build it from two pieces and just glass...

    1987 Larson DC-215 restoration

I've been using Harbor Freight plastic chisels to clean the silicone off. They are less likely to damage the gelcoat than razors but they are still pretty tough. The edge does get worn out pretty quick, but a run across some 400 grit paper brings it back to life. If you've got a chisel...

    Garboard drain cover

Agreed. We tapped all over mine and thought it was good, then ripped into it anyhow and some of the places we tapped were completely rotten. This test tells you nothing useful at all.

    Transom plate question

Shop around for a good quality used TIG machine. I got a pretty good deal on mine on CraigsList. I'm not a pro, but I do like welding aluminum, and you're right - it's very useful.

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

Well, my truck decided to get jealous of all the attention I've been giving the boat project and threw a fit, so I've been bogged down with trying to fix it. I'm out of town this coming weekend (if I can get the truck fixed) and also again in 2 weekends, so progress on the boat is slowing from...

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

Questions for the gurus: I know most of yall don't do carpet, but that's what I'm going to put down. Can I glue my carpet down directly to CSM that was laid up with waxed resin, or do I need to sand before gluing down the carpet? If it makes any difference, I'm planning to use DAP Weldwood...

    73 Sea Ray restoration

I was paying $6/stud in October last year, but it came down to $4/stud a few months ago...not sure where it is at now. I'm in TN.

I got the CSM with waxed resin down on the deck today.

Refinishing mohogany swim deck - what should I use?

Teak oil on mahogany is pretty, I think. I've done it in the past.

Refinishing mohogany swim deck - what should I use?

I think teak oil alone will be fine. Follow the directions on the can. JimS123 above has outlined a good oiling schedule, depending on what kind of life your boat lives.

Refinishing mohogany swim deck - what should I use?

Watco teak oil. See here for a before / after. I ran the boards through a planer and sanded the edges, then oiled with Watco teak oil. If you look up a few posts (#264) you can see what the boards looked like before oiling, but after planing.

I decided to do similar to what you're doing - tab with 2 layers of 1708 and butt the 1708 on the deck up to the tabbing. I'm going to go over everything with CSM though...no 6oz woven on mine. Your ski locker stuff looks good. I feel your pain on waiting for cures. You can try mixing it...

1987 Power Play XLT-185 - floors, stringers, and upholstery

I plugged all my foam pour holes and I got all the 1708 down on the deck except for a small spot in the stern/starboard area - I was boxing myself in, so I left it out and will lay the last piece tomorrow, then move on to the CSM. All my gimbal bearing tools arrived today too. I bought...

My eBay ski locker hatch has come a long way. I'll give the oil a day to dry then reassemble. Before and after:
