    Shift question

Pull the whole drive now, it's much easier to work on and lets you check out the gimbal/ujoints/alignment (buy a tool on ebay). Leak by the transom is no bueno. Y pipe can corrode and leak down there. If it's a leak around the transom shield though you're likely looking at a rotten transom.

V6 TKS next cylinder TDC 60 or 120 rotation

Yup, you're right. Coming to TDC every 60, firing every 120.

    Shift question

Yeah, you never came out of forward gear before that shaft slipped. Pushing the stick back at that point just gave it throttle.

    Shift question

There's a washer/spacer in between the cases that likes to escape when they're split. Proper fix is to split the case and replace the washer, the "other" way is to put a hose clamp around the shaft to keep it from dropping back down. That's assuming nothing weird is going on. The drive should...

    Shift question

Good thought, I assumed OP was actually travelling in reverse when the shifter was in reverse.

V6 TKS next cylinder TDC 60 or 120 rotation

You've got 6 cylinders, not 3. The 4.3 has an offset crank to allow it to fire evenly over the 2 banks, so each is firing every 60'.

    Shift question

How would putting the shifter in reverse cause the drive to go in forward gear? Or am I missing what happened?

    Stupid me, no oil

Hopefully to close this out. Finally got out yesterday. 1. Went about 20 miles yesterday, 3500-4200 rpm. All seemed well. After sitting last week, and again yesterday after cooling down there were a couple of drops still at the rear of the engine. Only thing I can think of is that if the RMS...

    Spring replacement?

So finally managed to get the boat in. Shout out to trailerparts dot com, that got me the correct springs the next day (!, only paid for standard shipping). They got pretty bad reviews but mostly around covid. I called and was able to reach an actual person no problem. The bushings that I got...

    That looks pretty bad.

    Mercruiser 4.3L - Stumbles at 3000RPM

Glad you found it. I've had that same fail, with those same symptoms. Intermittent electrical issues suck.

    Engine Swap

Did you ever try to drill the transom? Also, knocking the gimbal bearing out from the engine side is way easier than trying to pull it.

Install a used engine from one seller and outdrive from another not a matched set

I have always had a hard time with mine. Never perfect witness marks. When I first fit my new engine I used the hoist to raise the front in small increments until the rotation of the tool was easiest. Seems more sensitive than in/out or witness marks. That said, my drive goes on easy (usually)...

    Spring replacement?

I wonder if these would work. Then I could just get some off the shelf ½" bolts. I can find only galvanized with unknown hardness or zinc dichromate in grade 8.

    Spring replacement?

This thing is kicking my ass. Finally figured out that the original springs were open eye on one side. Found only a couple of places that had them, but got them and they fit. Then realized that my inner wheel bearing was gone... Other side was OK and the grease looked pretty good. Replaced...

For those of us who tow our boat, do you inspect it ?

Yeah, I should. In the midst of a debacle. My leaf springs COMPLETELY fell apart. While in the midst of the repair, noticed that the hub had some play. Inner bearing gone. Not sure how I made it back last season. I only put 10 miles/year max on it at 30 mph, so I'm lax with it. Lesson learned...

1998 Mercruiser 5.7 TBI Backfiring Under Load & Loss of Power

Might want to blow some air in the cylinders to see where your leak is occurring, although the head is coming off regardless. Did you pull the valve covers to make sure all the valves are functioning in those cylinders?
