Purchasing a 1971 23' Winner, no engine, great shape...

Check out the link in my signature block (at the bottom of this message). It contains lots of info about my restoration from beginning to end, including my many clueless questions that were patiently answered by many members of this board. My project was fairly minor compared to many (including...

    Running non ethanal during layup

I use ethanol, too, and my boat is wintered after having run ethanol fuel every year. I've never seen that in my carb. I think something else is the problem.

Purchasing a 1971 23' Winner, no engine, great shape...

I would add, fixing up my boat was one of the more satisfying things I've done. The sense of accomplishment and the knowledge I have of my boat are really priceless. There were times during the rebuild where I was not so happy, though...

Purchasing a 1971 23' Winner, no engine, great shape...

I have to say, I'm kind of impressed that you're even still considering this project, given the feedback you've received! I do think it will cost more than you anticipate just to get this boat in shape to sit at a dock so you can chill and hang out. (I also think that will get pretty boring...

Alpha One Gen 2 Outdrive not going back on

This seems to happen to me every third or fourth time I install my drive. I have no idea what causes it. I'm sure the problem is caused by something I'm doing (or not doing), but I'll follow all the usual suggestions and still it won't go on. I've found that if I leave it overnight and come...

    I/O Characteristics

I think outboards are butt-ugly on bowriders, but I have to confess, if/when I get a new boat, I will strongly consider an outboard for all reasons mentioned above.

    se106 stern drive

I believe the SE106 is the SEI version of the Mercruiser Alpha One Gen 1. The SE116 is the equivalent of the Alpha One Gen 2. If you have the SE106, you want the parts for the Alpha One Gen 1.

Nauticus Smart tabs vs Bennett Self Leveling Trim Tabs?

SmartTabs would certainly help with bow rise and porpoising, but I am a small-water boater. I would listen to the oceangoing boaters here regarding the appropriateness of fixed versus adjustable tabs.

    Gas tank size

Stabil should have the proportions on the label. I believe Marine Stabil (the blue variety) has a different mix than the red variety. I always just go by what the label says, then add a bit more.

Boat Eye Hook rusted nuts - how to remove

It seems with like the amount of work required to free that hook and clean up the threads, you'd be better off just replacing it.

suggestions on removing fuel from tank

I am not sure anything is actually required, however, marine Stabil is probably what you’d want to use. It certainly won’t hurt to use it.

    Fuel tank box

Just be sure you include some way to ventilate it, so you don’t create a box full of gas fumes.

    Sterndrive Covers

I find it’s easier to take it off and bring it indoors then to try to cover it and keep it from hitting the ground.

    Repairing Foam Filled Stringers

I think you'd be better served by just trying to do a better job foaming the stringers than the factory did. Trying to pour foam around the pre-cut foam boards would be a real pain, not to mention you would be robbing your boat of much of the strength of this type of stringer as Scott suggested.

    Another winterization question

If you're boating in salt water, I suppose there could be benefit to filling with antifreeze, but I really doubt it makes much of a difference for fresh water boaters. If you boat in fresh water and it makes you feel better, drain the engine and then refill with antifreeze however you want...

    Transom replacement on I/O

Replace the entire transom. This is not the place for a halfway repair.

Stringer Sistering Question - 1998 Falcon Thunderbird

This looks like a pretty good fix. That joint is probably stronger than the wood on either side of it.

First post, new (to me) boat, and how badly did I screw up?

Not sure I’d go for a boat with an OMC drive, personally. They have been out of business for some time…

    Gas Issues

I think it would be generous to refer to that liquid as 'gas'.

    Submersible trailer lights

I just went to O'Reilly's Auto Parts and bought some LED replacement fixtures. They were listed as submersible and I've had no problems for several years. I probably could have found cheaper sets on Amazon, but for something like this, I'd rather be able lay eyes on it before buying.
