    1976 Starcraft Chieftain 18' OB - restomod

The boy and I got out there early this morning, before 0900, but didn't got a lot done. 😏 My young neighbor buddy had moved out west back in the winter and is back in town for a few days to get his house ready for sale. So, we went out to lunch and then visited for most of the day. He's...

Yup. I o ly I used this mini-drill press and it worked well on my Kingfisher. Gonna use it again on my Chieftain. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000JCIMEA/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Finally! Some progress today! Our primary goal today was to get the stern patch ready for installation. It took a long time to figure out how to ensure that the holes for the patch were in the right place on the hull. We ended up deciding to drill holes down the center of the patch...

16 foot 1985 Grumman Aluminum Boat

I'm in the process of dealing with corrosion repair on my Chieftain project. Mostly at the stern. The brazing option doesn't work if you're close to seams which contain sealant, which could heat up and be destroyed or leak out. In other, more open areas, it might work fine. I'm using JB...

No work done the last couple of days. I was out of town yesterday, we had an appliance repair guy here this morning and then we had to run errands this afternoon. But! One of those errands was to have the 0.080" sheet patch rolled to shape. And I'm pleased to say that it fits perfectly under...

Where do I belong? Alum Goods 1687, SS16 Clone?

When I first got the Kingfisher, it had a bench seat. And that really suuuucked! Having to climb over and around that thing in order to move fore and aft stunk. And with 2 or more people moving at the same time, it was not only annoying, it made the boat more tippy. Retrieving...

I got out there early this morning and started drilling out the marked rivets with a 3/16" DeWalt bit. And as happens many times, found problems. Like extra large rivet holes. Sigh. And this one got a little lop-sided during the drilling process. 😬 But, I test bucked a...

More progress today. Much of it a learning experience for both the boy and myself. And some lessons were painful! We did some more cleaning and then moved on to rib reinstallation and rivet stuff. We both had to learn about installing solid rivets, a first for us. 🤓 I showed the...

Yes, I'd read that the Coat-it is thicker. I plan on using Gluvit as the primary for getting down deep into the hull crevices. The Coat-it will be used for shallower stuff. :)

Yow! I totally missed that safety violation! I'm normally very strict about safety. Thanks for the alert! 😬 "The boy" as my wife calls him, is my stepson and will turn 16 in a few weeks. He's a good kid and normally is very careful about safety too. After I saw your heads up, I sat the...

    1976 Starcraft Chieftain 18' OB - restomod

This evening we received the sticky stuff. Tomorrow we'll get started on rivet and leak repairs! :D The boy counted 136 rivets that need to be replaced, not including the ribs we removed. And there are "other" holes which will need to be addressed as well. While I was sitting in the...

If yours is the 4-cylinder, then I have the same motor. Yep, it can take a little while for the water to fully circulate through the system.

Thanks WM! We're moving forward a lot faster with the Chief than we did with the KF. :) Yeah, having a strong youngster to do a lot of the heavy work is great. Only 2 more years left for him being here, so we'll keep him busy! 🤪 Speaking of power tools, a few days ago I was sitting...

Advice for Smith Mountain Lake, VA

I spent a weekend there back in the early '90s. Yes, there really are monster stripers there. I parked my RV and boat, then walked over to check out the dock and launch ramp. As I walked up to the dock I saw a big school of stripers, all about 3 feet long, cruising the shoreline. My eyes...
