    1976 Starcraft Chieftain 18' OB - restomod

More progress today! While the boy worked inside the Chief, I cleaned up the cabin substructure. Parallel processing and whatnot! :D That carpet adhesive was pretty yucky. The power sander works well in this application. Meanwhile, the boy was hard at it inside the boat. (y)...

    1976 Starcraft Chieftain 18' OB - restomod

Made progress today! :D We had zero effect trying to remove the carpet adhesive in the cabin area with the Brush Cleaner. We also tried heating that dried on goop with a heat gun, then scraping it with a metal putty knife and that did nothing. So I went after it with the power...

    How effective is Gluvit?

Gluvit works great when applied correctly... from inside the hull. Many of us have used it and Coat-it (a competitor) as well. I used it on my Kingfisher project and just ordered some for my Chieftain project. Come visit us over in the Starcraft subforum. Lots of great advice and info...

    1976 Starcraft Chieftain 18' OB - restomod

Hahaha! That's it exactly! :ROFLMAO: Yeah, I started out that way, then things changed. Right now I'm not sure I'll be able to order any from the original vendor. I got a reply asking me to "take a picture of my original battery" so that a decision could be made. Uhhh.. I ordered rivets...

    1976 Starcraft Chieftain 18' OB - restomod

Got a little work done this morning. Not as much as I would have liked, but some. We were sidetracked by selling tractor stuff again. Most of that is sold and I only have 2 items left, so hopefully it won't interfere much more. The boy got busy with the wire wheel and drill. He's learning...

    1976 Starcraft Chieftain 18' OB - restomod

Been running the roads again today, so no boat work. :cautious: Thanks for the helpful info, WM! :) (y) After reading your post, I successfully cancelled my order for 1/2" length rivets and tried to cancel the one I placed for 3/8" length rivets but am not sure that I made it in time. No...

    1976 Starcraft Chieftain 18' OB - restomod

I'm thinking of using my rotary tool to grind a notch in the stern flange to fix this hole after cleanup. A couple of options; install a rivet there or fill with JB Marine Weld. Thoughts?

    1976 Starcraft Chieftain 18' OB - restomod

I really need to order rivets. 😬 The boy only has 2 days of school left and we'll soon be working hard on the Chief to get it going. I have to allow for delivery times in my planning. I have a couple of questions that I need to have answered before I can begin ordering rivets and...

    1976 Starcraft Chieftain 18' OB - restomod

Hull cleaning progress as of yesterday morning. Tomorrow and the day after I should be able to get some more done. (I hope.) 🤪 Tonight I bought this remote control. It's not the exact same one as I had originally with the 70(s), but I got it dirt cheap and it should work well enough to...

    1976 Starcraft Chieftain 18' OB - restomod

Yesterday I did about 2 hours of hull cleaning inside the boat. I combined using the power sander and the drill with wire wheels/brushes, etc. Worked well. The boy did a little more when he got home. Then we got sidetracked by tractor stuff for several hours, right up until dark. I'm...

While looking for rivet prices, I found this. Not sure what to make of it. 🤷‍♂️ http://avstop.com/ac/apgeneral/rivets.html Certain aluminum alloys react to each other and, therefore, must be thought of as dissimilar metals. The commonly used aluminum alloys may be divided into the two...

Hi Decker, good to hear from you. Best wishes to you and your wife. :)

Yes, we'll do another water test to confirm that it's watertight before a splash. In addition to patching, I'll use Coat-it to seal everything up. On the Kingfisher I used Gluvit and it ran everywhere! I hope the Coat-it isn't as messy. 🤪 Okay, I'll replace any rivets that are not in...

    198x SS-150 rebuild

I feel your pain! BTDT. 😏 It was absolute murder for me to get the paint off my Kingfisher. It took many attempts and easily $400 in tools and expendable supplies, if not more. Just for the stripping. And it took weeks and weeks and multiple attempts. I ran into even more troubles...

Ya mean I have to buy a belt sander now too? 🤪 :ROFLMAO:

    1976 Starcraft Chieftain 18' OB - restomod

More progress today. (We also did a little something on the KF.) I finished up fabricating and installing the temporary lift points. I had to drill a couple more holes in the stern to solidly mount the 2x4s. It was weird to find that the upper factory bolts were drilled at different...

1973 Starcraft SuperSport 16ft. restoration questions

For my Kingfisher, I made a single chamfer cut using my jig saw and a circular saw for the straight cuts. I plan to do the same thing with my Chieftain. :)

    1976 Starcraft Chieftain 18' OB - restomod

Should I re-buck or replace leaking rivets near the dent? We're making progress out here again. 🙂

    1976 Starcraft Chieftain 18' OB - restomod

Ah. So I should treat the dent as cosmetic and not structural? My concern was that I'd be 15 miles out in the Gulf and have a catastrophic failure while pounding waves running to shore from a storm.😬
