Charging voltage drop with diode isolator

Thanks for the info. Yes the 'excite' is internal and I won't modify the alternator. The Argo isolator 'FET' semiconductor seems to be a good solution, with a maximum of 0.1V drop at high current, and less drop at low charging rate. Either that or the ACR, but both seem to solve my problem...

Charging voltage drop with diode isolator

It makes sense. I just found on internet the manual on my diode isolator, and they say to cut the B+ wire and pass another wire to the isolator. I'm surprised that my boat didn't come already equipped like that from Chaparral...

Charging voltage drop with diode isolator

Yes the orange is tapped off at your blue arrow, and the other end seems to go to the relay box. The Red you are pointing to has one end to the ALT output (new wire), but the other end is buried in the wire loom.

Charging voltage drop with diode isolator

Jim, those smart chargers, are they only on 120V? Or they can be installed between the alternator and the batteries, in place of the isolator? It seems that a ACR is installed on newer boats. If I replace my diode isolator with a ACR, I will gain 0.7 volts when I'm driving the boat, would...

Charging voltage drop with diode isolator

alldodge, my alternator output seems to go to the relay box. Take a look at my other post, I have some pictures. https://forums.iboats.com/threads/alternator-b-wire-vs-relay-box-volvo-penta.742318/ but it's possible that after a relay it goes to the isolator. Here is a drawing I made of what 'I...

Charging voltage drop with diode isolator

I find that my batteries could give more when I am 2 days at anchor. At home, with the 120V charger, I have almost 14V at the batteries. So they are fully charged when I quit home. On the water, when the engine is running, there is like 13V at the batteries and 13.7 at the alternator B+ post...

Alternator B+ wire vs relay box Volvo Penta

I was inspecting my alternator wiring to see if there was a 'S' terminal to see if I could increase my charging voltage, anyway, this is what I found. The big orange wire going out of the alternator has been cut and another wire (red) connected to it. I found that originally, the orange wire...

    losing lower unit oil

Mine was holding pressure and vacuum, and was still loosing oil by the bearing carrier oil seal. I'm working on that now.

    I/Os in salt water...

Thanks. Yes a bit expensive at $150. I don't know if there is a calibration in those probes, because, at work, the welder can braze silver...

    I/Os in salt water...

alldodge, this is an interesting article. Unfortunately, Fluke mention what DMM to use, but say nothing about the probe. Anyone know where to get those probes, and if they are expensive. I would like to test the system on my Volvo.

    rolling torque wrench

I need to change my drive shaft oil seal on my Duoprop SM. Instructions say to install a new crush sleeve and gradually torque the bolt until the rolling torque is between 9-14 in lb. But I don't find a torque wrench in that range. Mine is a 0-600 in lb with the first mark being 20 Where do...

    Volvo 300-B (5.7L) mystery hose

KetchiMan, I had the same question as you. I has been answered in the following thread, post #37,38,39. To resume, it is a pulse limiter. Air fumes from the fuel cell are sucked in the intake manifold, and that disc is like a protection in case the engine backfires...

Spark plugs, Volvo numbers don't match

Yes, 993s are platimum. My engine is a MPI Gi-D. I just found in a box given with the boat a set of iridium plugs Delco 983. After inspection, they look like new. I suspect a mechanic at some point suggested a spark plug change, without knowing they were iridium with a long life. Anyway, I...

    Looking for a bigger boat....

What I think is the most important thing in towing, is preparation and equipment. The 'Oh Crap this feels dangerous' time?' you are referring to, can happen while towing at 2000lb under the maximum capacity, while, you could tow at the maximum, and feel like there is nothing behind. It is...

Crazy Trim Problem - please help my sanity!

sbbamafan Do a test. Unplug the motor, and attach a voltmeter to the feed wires and activate the control. If you have 12V, but the motor doesn't run when connected, and is know as good, you may have a bad ground (resistive) or bad 12V connection. If it's the case, follow the wires to the...

Spark plugs, Volvo numbers don't match

Scott, the attachment picture of the plug was on Amazon.ca Sometimes some merchants are way out of price. Marc c, I will take a look at Rockauto. I never bought from them, but heard that they have good prices.

Spark plugs, Volvo numbers don't match

Thanks Scott for the reference number. B.O.A.T. Regular plug at $22 CND each because of the S.S., or Covid, may be because in Canada, who knows. I will check my local autopart store for the AC 41-993

Spark plugs, Volvo numbers don't match

Volvo Penta 5.7 Gi-D 2004 I would like to change my spark plugs. In the Volvo manual, for a 5.7Gi-D, it is listed as 3861632 On the engine block name plate, it is listed as 3851632 And what is installed right now from the previous owner is AC 41-993 I would like to go with the same AC plugs...

Outdrive trim pump, where is the power source

Found it!!!! The breaker is mounted under a bracket behind the engine and beside the big electrical plug. Thanks guys for giving me the motivation to crawl behind that engine. :) Being RED on RED was not easy to spot!

Outdrive trim pump, where is the power source

It makes sense that there is a breaker. Alldodge, I looked around the engine, on the transom, etc, but don't find that 50A breaker.
