I have returned... with a Starcraft this time!

If I'm reading the wiring schematic correctly, my battery isn't charging. I've never actually tested to see if the battery is charging but unless Mercury used a "magic bridge rectifier" I'm guessing that it hasn't been charging at all. That would be because of the missing wires from the stator...

I have returned... with a Starcraft this time!

Yah, that's in the plan. But the biggest surprise is that there are no yellow/red stripe charge wires coming from the stator down to the rectifier. So, unless I've missed something, I'm going to have to pull the flywheel and see what's going on with that issue. :noidea:

    Uh oh..New Transom?

This is how we clamped the transom for our Kingfisher. No screws necessary. :D We used long wood clamps to make sure that the two halves didn't wiggle while we were setting up.

1975 21' Mariner rebuild - replacement foam thickness?

Yep, I stood mine on end, glued and taped the stacks together and covered the 6 rows closest to the stern with HDPE trash bags to seal them off from any potential gasoline spills. :joyous: Like so.

    I need a timing light

I've been beating my brains in trying to find a suitable timing light for my 2-stroke outboard engines. :grumpy: I'd ordered one which took over a week to arrive. Got it out of the box and it was defective. Sent it back. Did more research and ordered a different one from a different vendor...

I need a part number for a neutral safety switch remote control (1985 Merc 50HP ELPT)

Hi guys. The motor is working normally now. Thanks again for all the help! :eagerness: I realized awhile ago that there was a grounding problem. It was just bugging me that I couldn’t find out exactly where it was and I wanted to hunt it down. Yesterday I thought that I’d found a...

I need a part number for a neutral safety switch remote control (1985 Merc 50HP ELPT)

Hey guys, I found the problem! I had limited time today but tracked it down. Then did a quick confirmation test between rain showers. I'll post a detailed reply tomorrow after I get everything done. Meanwhile, I'll tease y'all with this... which is related to the actual problem!

I need a part number for a neutral safety switch remote control (1985 Merc 50HP ELPT)

No joy again today. :mmph: Yesterday I got all the wires out of the tangled mess they'd been in and got them, and their respective connections, cleaned up. Today I reconnected them to their normal spots. We continuity tested from the solenoid all the way to the key switch. I tested the...

I need a part number for a neutral safety switch remote control (1985 Merc 50HP ELPT)

Six days later and we were finally able to do a little work again today. I got the wires untangled and in the process I learned a couple more things. Discovered two more ugly Y splices. And I apparently don't have the yellow/red wires coming from the stator to the rectifier...

I need a part number for a neutral safety switch remote control (1985 Merc 50HP ELPT)

GA_Boater Okay, let me get some answers for ya! The engine performed normally (electrically) on 13 Jul 20 which was the last time we were on the water. It cranked fine when started EXCEPT ONCE when I was ready to move to another spot. At that time, I thought that I'd not properly recentered...

I need a part number for a neutral safety switch remote control (1985 Merc 50HP ELPT)

Thanks for the tip! I'll keep that in mind. Pix and diagrams are attached below. Today we reconfigured the wiring back to normal and once again got no response when I turned the key. We started troubleshooting from the beginning once again. The results said an open ground wire once more...

I need a part number for a neutral safety switch remote control (1985 Merc 50HP ELPT)

Well, I zapped myself this afternoon. :grumpy: And I'm mad at me for being a doofus. I could have been seriously hurt. :nono: The problem wasn't the solenoid. "The boy" (my stepson) and I installed the replacement yesterday morning. Still no joy when I turned the key. Nothing...

    Wearing a mask.

I haven't been inside a store in 2 months, with one exception when I had to use their restroom and even then I just went inside and was back out in a couple minutes. When I do go out, I always have a mask. I take my hand sanitizer as well, even though I don't go inside stores, etc. My wife or...

I have returned... with a Starcraft this time!

I recalled that I had a buddy working on one of my backup throttles a few years ago. He's the young fella sitting on the floor. I dug through my old pix and found what I needed. I can see that the NSS on the old assembly is the same form factor as the 87-17277t. A few weeks ago, we gave...

I need a part number for a neutral safety switch remote control (1985 Merc 50HP ELPT)

1985 Mercury 50HP ELPT, 4 cylinder, 2-stroke. Power tilt & trim. I've searched for hours today and just can't find the part number for the neutral safety interlock. I'm sure that it's been used on a variety of engines but I want to be sure that I'll get the right one if needed. My remote is...

I have returned... with a Starcraft this time!

Fixed! :D I'd hollered for help over on the Mercury outboard repair forum and Chris1956 helped me out. Many thanks to him! :) All I needed to do was to remove the top cylinder bracket bolt, tilt the cylinder back and everything came loose easily. Getting it back together was simply...

How do I get this apart? (1985 50HP ELPT)

I want to replace the bushings and spacers on my power trim cylinders. How do I get this done? I removed the outside bolt and the inside locknut but that's as far as I can go. I thought that I might be able to pry the stud out, but that didn't happen. How does it work? The end...
