1989 Force 85 HP Starter Disengages

Armatures don't usually go bad, I've seen one that needed replacing. Just sand paper the copper connectors with 200g sandpaper. Get the Mercury or old stock Force brush sets. OEM bendix is where the major cost is incurred.

1989 Force 85 HP Starter Disengages

90% of the time all you need is to take it apart and clean it. I've only replaced the bendix 3-4 times in my career. Then it was because someone lubed it too excessively and got grease up inside the rubber. Redbarron is right about the new starters from China= JUNK

    1989 Force 85 WOT

The butterflies may be past horizontal or may not go horizontal. Operate the lever by hand and see how far it goes? The final output is affected by prop size, load. A 21 makes the motor work harder than a 15p. It's a combination on the load, prop and boat. Idle has no effect on wide open...

    1991 Force 90hp starting problem

IF???? it started at wide open??? Then move the throttle back and start it at a slower speed. Make sure the muffs are on or the lower unit is DEEEEP in a bucket. 4-5" over the cavitation plate. If the timing was at 28d. I'd not worry about it.

    1991 Force 90hp starting problem

The flywheel is mounted on the top of the crankshaft, it's indexed using a small piece of metal(key) it makes the ignition fire at the right time. If? the key breaks/shears the spark might not work or sparks at the wrong time.

    98 75hp Mercury Force misfire

Yes the trigger can go bad but these don't usually. This might not work for you??? MISS AT ANY RPM: 1. Disconnect the Yellow wires from the stator to the rectifier and retest. If the miss clears, replace the rectifier. 2. Disconnect the idle stabilizer (advance module) and reset the timing...

Changed water pump, then no reverse. '96 Force 120hp

The pic shows the top of the shift shaft. Turn that 1/8th a turn until it hits the right spot. You can be as much as 180d out and the prop turns. Spin the prop not the drive shaft and try to find the right spot.

    1987 125 hp throttle slop

Yes the flywheel needs to come off. I think there's some good video's out there covering this. Just remember to leave the big nut on the top so the flywheel doesn't fly away( I've seen this) also wear leather gloves ,first time I saw someone remove the flywheel the guy ended up getting 15+...
