4.3L mercruiser with points. Timing question.

Nope the Mercruiser 4.5 V6 is “theirs” but look at the parts diagrams there’s an awful lot of similarities! Only the cyl heads look a bit different and of course the ignition and fuel system.

4.3L mercruiser with points. Timing question.

Interesting that Mercruiser’s “own” inboard V6 really looks like a warmed over old GM 4.3. Same 90* block, same split journal crankshaft, same style balance shaft etc if you look at Merc parts diagrams. Makes you wonder if they just bought the tooling from GM & then made some updates &...

4.3L mercruiser with points. Timing question.

Also that info about the 4.3 being an uneven firing engine was confusing to me. Yes the first GM V6s were odd firing due to the 90* angle between the cyls whereas 60* would have been perfect for a V6. Supposedly the “even fire” crankshaft with the split journals corrected this but maybe not...

4.3L mercruiser with points. Timing question.

Been trying to figure this out for years. OMC used the same engine & same points distributor yet initial timing was set at 6* and centrifugal advance was 12* for a total of only 18*. It never made sense to me that the V6 should have so much less advance than the V8.

2000 5.0 GL intermittent slow acceleration

Probably not on a 2000 model year. They used the Prestolite BID electronic and the GM EST. A GL model should be a carb I think. Prob a 2 bbl or 4 bbl Holley

    Shearing starter bolts 2005 5.0

As stated could be a hydrolock if you stopped fast pull spark plugs crank engine over if water shoots out of plug holes that's it Otherwise, starter bolts too long or not tightened enough. If you do your own starter you have to make sure the bolts aren't too long, and also another thing make...

    Need to vent....

This is one big reason I kept my simple old boat with the points distributor and 4 bbl carb…no EPA approved nonsense no electronic mystery boxes no CANBUS wiring no evaporative emissions to clog up. Elegantly simple the only requirement is that the owner has auto shop 101 skills circa 1970. If...

    Volvo Penta 7.4 Gi

The other thing to check is if ignition parts (modules) and EFI parts are available if it’s a fuel injected engine. These parts sometimes get discontinued on engines that old. Carbs are easier to deal with because parts are easy to find.

1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

Post up a pic of the boat on the trailer It took me several seasons to get the trailer the way I wanted it to be….trailer was too short so I fitted a longer tongue & longer roller bars and added more rollers. Then lowered it on the trailer by fitting lower crossmember brackets. Added a bow...

Even back in the old days, VW did not live up to the reputation The flat four engines were good for MAYBE 100K with constant valve adjustments and oil changes. Had them and did it.

I am in 2 different Jeep discussion boards and what I learned is there is stuff that goes wrong with the newer models that we didn’t have with the older ones like mine…example Air suspension leaks costs a fortune to fix Leather dash cover delaminates and looks like azz Active head rests come...

It’s the elitist Euro attitude. Same problems with many FCA/Stellantis products. Been trying to find a late model Grand Cherokee Durango or Wrangler to replace my old 2007 Grand 5.7. Every one I looked at (20+ vehicles) I found something wrong with. My decision: since the 07 is in great...

Hard plane after switch from points ignition

Any old school hot rod shops near you? Maybe with a Sun distributor machine? They prob could replace the springs so your advance rate is correct

    Volvo Penta 7.4 Gi

Actually raw water cooled inboard marine cooling systems are pretty simple (especially older VP engines) not like what Merc has on their modern engines that have the easy drain system, I have never seen so many hoses and plastic fittings as are there are on my brother's 2020 4.5. It works fine...

'89 Merc 3.0 - electronic ignition conversion PNs

The points now in my distributor I installed in 2016. It starts right up and runs fine. It's not like when we had cars with points and drove12,000 miles a year that would wear down the rubbing block and the gap would be too small (dwell angle too big). Most recreational boats don't get used near...

Hard plane after switch from points ignition

timing out meaning that it goes back to zero advance? then what alldodge says makes sense....shift interrupt I had the switches stick on (OMC) and it wouldn't run above idle....the OMC system doesn't short the ignition momentarily but it lowers the idle to 450 rpm instead, this way if you took a...

Does the power trim motor have to be bleed, I removed the gimbal housing for transom repair awhile ago. Motor engages no movement of Trim Rods.

When I did my trim piston seals starting with the pistons in the extended position I just filled each cyl as much as I could & then filled the pump (carefully it can spit back at you) . Next cycled it up & down 5/6 times then tilted them all the way up & refilled pump. BTW I did this with the...
