    Shearing starter bolts 2005 5.0

Are you sure it was a broken bolt? What can happen is this, there are a number of different aftermarket starters out there, they may all be slightly different dimensionally. The bolts must be the correct length for that starter. If they are even slightly too long the starter will not be clamped...

1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

Mine has always run pretty close to the opening temp of the thermostat, 160*. On plane it will be at 160 it maybe a little less. It will rise a bit higher after coming off plane (170-175) but after either idling or slow speed running like at no wake speed it comes right back down to 160. My 1988...

1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

Sounds good, boat fuel gauges aren't that accurate as it is. I always fill mine up when I get to 1/4 tank. I have 2 fuel docks nearby so it's not an inconvenience unless people are sitting at the dock there doing things that they aren't supposed to do like washing their boat!

4.3 LX water in the oil...

Don’t think the shop was right about leaded gas. Leaded gas was getting phased out starting in ‘72 all cars after that were set up for unleaded fuel. That 4.3 didn’t show up till 1985 and all cars ran on unleaded by then. So they all came with hardened valve seats.

    MerCruiser update

Well that’s the thing you’re gonna spill some no matter how careful you are so I use PG….remember Sierra no tox is good enough to use as an engine coolant

    MerCruiser update

I’ve been telling people around here for years that if they want to use AF West Marine has a page on their site that explains which AF to use based on your climate. Here were we can get to zero, I would not use -50 or -60 in a cast iron engine. I used to use -100 but it is pricey. Last few years...

1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

I like the idea of being able to monitor exhaust temps. Volvo actually had this as an option and with a sending unit on each exhaust elbow to feed back data. I do it the old fashioned way; I keep an IR temp gun & check them every so often. I usually get 90-100* at idle and the hottest they may...

1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

Every spring when I get the boat ready I dump out the contents of the fuel filter into a mason jar to check for water and debris. And every year it looks fine so I just dump it in the lawnmower gas can and install a new fuel filter.

1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

I bet there was a bare spot in one of the trim wires inside the remote control. About the possible fuel issue I’d add a bit more fuel & try again. In your you tube vid it looked to be running great.

Wont rev past 4k -ESA issue?

great job on the transom, motor mounts, and deck! I think my boat (200 Horizon) is the bowrider version of your boat.... I wish I could be more helpful, my old boat still has the points distributor, the only things that have been changed from OEM OMC is the ESA module, and the switches, they...

Hard plane after switch from points ignition

PS I know Merc used the same Prestolite distributor as OMC because I have a spare one; the OMC one is painted grey and Merc is painted black. Otherwise the same

Hard plane after switch from points ignition

Not sure what Merc’s spec was for this engine but the OMC version with the Prestolite points distributor was set to 6* BTDC and got 12* of centrifugal advance for a total of 18*. Why they were set up to get less advance than any of the V8s I don’t know but that’s how it was. Engine runs fine...

Water in bilge while on muffs

I get the pain of trying to work these problems out yourself, but water in the bilge, not knowing for sure where it's coming from, that would always be in the back of my mind.

1996 Four Winns Sundowner with 5.0 Cobra engine and drive

I think you're going to have to find a wiring diagram for your trim system because it's different than mine. If you can't find an OMC Cobra one, remember the Volvo SX of same year should be the same. A couple of odd things that have happened over the years, and solutions.... when I first had the...

Fresh water corrosion and anode choices…

Something there is VERY wrong! Never seen this in 20 years of salt water use, not just use, but mooring an outdrive in salt water. You need a marine electrical expert.

    Trailer axle capacity/sizing

If you’re going with a 21’ boat I think a 3500 likely will be overloaded. You could buy a 5200 already made (Trailer parts depot sells them) or have one made by a place like Champion Trailers. That’s what the did. Took about a month and they did a great job!
