    The purple/yellow “by pass” wire is connected to the “Boost” solenoid on top of the engine for the ignition + wire on the coil. Also may be connected to the outer small stud of the starter solenoid instead If the “boost” solenoid if it is a non grounded base style.

    It may be possible that one of the plugs in the bottom of the float chamber is leaking. That has always been a problem with Qjets. Flip the carburetor over, remove the throttle plate base. Clean the area around the plugs and coat over and around them with JB weld.

    The vacuum readings, are they with the boat in the water or on a trailer? The last 454 I had would idle @ 14-15 inches on the trailer, it was a Holley, when the boat was in the water it was only around 8-9 because of the back pressure of the exhaust underwater.     Was that happening before the contaminated fuel issue? Next time you shut off the engine open the engine cover, remove the flame arrestor and look down the air horn to see if gas is dribbling into the Venturi.

    One way to see if water is circulating through the engine’s cooling system is water coming out the 2 exhaust relief holes near the transom. If the copper pipe is not plugged into the pump cover and pocket cover water will only flow out the propeller area.

    It just occurred to me what you posted on #18. Are you trying to install the lower with the copper pipe in the top of the pump housing? There is no way the pipe will go in the pocket cover without damaging the grommet. Even if you are installing the lower with the pipe in the pocket cover...

    If in doubt which way the solenoid is grounded I used to just connect it to a battery with some jumper wires. Then with a remote starter button and a test light is the easiest way. If the bracket is the ground and if the solenoid is good then the “I” terminal should give voltage when the “S”...

    If the lower unit is still off use a garden hose to back flush the incoming water to check if anything is stuck in the system. Have you checked if there is anything inside the inlet of the thermostat housing?

    Is the gasket that goes between the bottom of the wear plate and the pump base stuck under the plate? I do not see it in the picture.

    Before the Mercruiser made flush out came out I always wrapped a bungee strap around the drive to keep it in place.

    The drive has to be removed before the shaft can be pulled out. I feel your pain as it can be a real PITA. Remove the bracket off the cable spool which may make it easier to access the slotted screw in the spool.

    Measure center to center the 2 bolts that mount the rear of the engine to the inner transom plate. Hopefully if it is 9&5/8” then you should be able to reuse the flywheel cover and coupling.

    Another way is to squirt some auto magic transmission fluid in the carburetor. If there is a exhaust leak you will see the smoke.

    Since you have 2 engines one way to find whether the drive or the engine is causing the problem is to cris cross the drive to engines cooling hoses with some auto heater hose. I know this may sound weird but it is easy to do.

    His inner transom engine mount spread is wider than an Alpha which is 9& 5/8”. Is there a 12& 3/4” flywheel with the small bolt pattern? I wonder if the larger flywheel could be turned down to the 12&3/4” dimension so that the ring gear can be swapped over? Then everything will bolt in using...

    If you cannot stop the water by hand then that rules out the drive pump delivery to the engine. You really need to add a short section of clear hose to the in coming water hose at the thermostat housing. If there is a combustion leak the pressure will overcome the incoming drive pump supply...
