    Bought a new long block and wondering about the coupling and gimbal bearing.

    You can always change the gimbal bearing and since it is smooth it should last. The coupling is worth changing now with that many hours. That is something that you never know when it will leave you like propeller hubs are known to do.

    Some flywheels are made so that the ring gear can be on the front or rear depending whether for a stern drive or a MIE application. Is your boat a stern drive or a straight inboard ?

    It would not surprise me if the propeller is corroded on the shaft and the P O tried to pry it off causing the damage to the case. If that is what has happened you will probably have to take it to a shop that can remove the propeller and the gear case can be repaired by welding on a patch. Also...

    One other option is to rent/borrow a engine lift or even a patient lift to hold the drive in position using the dipstick threaded hole with a lifting ring and some chain.

    When I was referring to grounding on the 400 drive in the picture OMC also said it was for galvanic purposes and also Is why it was retained.

    The stainless steel wire from the upper cover to the pivot cap is also part of the grounding protection. On electric shift drives it also assured a negative ground to the shift coils.

    The wire you are looking for is on the 9 o’clock position outboard side of the starter slave solenoid, that is the one that feeds the + side of the coil while in cranking mode.

    Get a 12 volt test light or a volt meter and have someone turn the key to start while you probe the + side of the coil. If there is low or no voltage then the bypass circuit in the slave solenoid may be the problem.

    If you look to the right of the starter in the wire diagram there is a arrow pointing to the starter relay. It is just a square relay instead of a solenoid. For some reason Volvo likes the Bosch style of relay.

    It looks like a Morse or a Marmac. Is your drive electric shift or mechanical? There are several OMC concealed side mount controls available if you google OMC shift control.

    The bolts are going to be really tight. Be sure to use a 6 point wrench or socket to break them loose. The starter is about 1/2 the weight of the earlier Delco Remy type so it will not be a problem to re install the new one.

    The register hole that centers the starter on Ford Marine/industrial engines is about 1/8” smaller than the same plate on automobiles. If an automobile starter is bolted on it distorts the plate and the starter drive gear does not engage the flywheel correctly which will destroy the ring gear...

    If you have never replaced a ring gear you must heat it so that it will drop on the flywheel.

If you ever have to remove the port engine you will need to remove the manifold, front mount, heat exchanger, flywheel cover, drive coupler, flywheel, and then check in at the hospital for a transfusion. This would be a really good project for a pair of 200/300...
