    i've never had one do it but think i've heard they could possibly.. never change one switch box one at a time.. always both.. a bad bias on one can mask a problem with it and/or cause a good one ta goo bad.....

    correct on tha stator.. it can even check good with jus a resistance number but actually be "not good"... a bad high side most times a motor will perform normal in all aspects till ya get ta 2500/3000 rpm.. it will still be smooth but jus won't accelerate... timin' after ya chunk tha module...

    it could but would be down on raw power.. weight and configuration (set up) would determine how it runs with low comp.. jus tired will be different from a damaged hole...

    sounds like an electrical "start/run circuit" gremlin.. gonna need some 'lectrics testin'................ key sw, both boat and motor harness.... jmo

    do comp test first... don't run it any less tha 50 ta 1.... sounds like a carb issue.. do you have an oem manual?.. if not send me an email addy.. i'll get ya one.

    chunk tha "idle speed controller" (what ya call spark advance box) in tha trash... re do timing... after ya throw it away make sure ya have a white/black "jumper" (length is a non issue) between tha bias post on both switch boxes....

    too much oil doesn't usually effect tha run part.. it jus smokes a little more.. we ran 24 ta 1 in our hot rods with no problems other than a little "smokey" at idle..... black/wet sounds like they are losin' fire for whatever reason....

    should be WMV's.. has screws.. WMH pumpers only made 1 year ('91), maybe a little of second year before they were dumped....

    pictures of power head.. both sides and from top... any numbers/letters stamped on block half flange/port side?.. number stamped on welsh plug?.. build date at base of #2 block half, kinda behind tha bend in tha timin' arm.. will be 1/8" numbers mo/d/yr.. might be hard ta find but its there...

    A10 was in '96... merc was not real consistent with QC on their ecu's.. should be a "ruff" estimate on tha serial tag on tha clamp.. lotsa factors come inta play with max rpm so take it with tha typical grain a salt.............

    ............. that motor has "electrionic" electrical junk.. it has a single box that replaces switch boxes and it also has an electronic ecu.. these can be a PIA ta diagnose ('specially ona computer)... you need to go by what your manual (if its tha right one?) tells you ta do for carb...

    Thought about installing kill switch but not sure how to wire it. after you get tha black/yellows straightened out you can install a "kill switch", between tha SOLID BLACK goin' to tha key switch and tha BLACK/YELLOW leavin' key switch.......

    JAN.. that harness has nothing ta do with tha way a motor runs.. tha only thing it controls "as for its running" is it has a start circuit and a kill circuit.. it cannot change tha way, rpm and/or speed of tha motor.. it simply allows ta be started and/or shut down................ if it was...

    there were a few that said they could do it.. what i saw was some that could repair tha pump driver circuit (with success) and some that claimed ta be able change tha fuel map and raise tha limiter in some (not so successful).. i had a coupla of 'em done back in tha early 2000's without much...

    yes, it will.... jus don't make a habit of doin' it.... normally bad high or low side of stator will not cause it ta die.. if high side is bad it will usually run jus fine up ta 28/3000 and jus quits pullin' but still runs at those rpm jus fine...............

    jus unscrew it.. there is NOT an open hole in tha head... plug tubes on carbs... why ya wanna do away with it??? jus curious???
